I was interested in trying Another Code. What's the best way to play it?

I thought the Switch version looked pretty good, but the DS game has a much better art style.

They're pretty different, hell they even make story changes (moreso in the second game than the first). In a way you could think of it as a remake styled after movie remakes moreso than video game remakes. Both versions have their merits.

Yeah the second game has a lot more changes to it than the first one. First one tries to play things pretty closely to the original with some changes here or there for certain character motivations. Second has its antagonist have a completely different backstory and major events are changed and some loose ends of the original sequel that were meant to be addressed in later entries get abruptly wrapped up in the remake since those entries never got made.

Another Code R is much shorter, they remove whole sections of the original. Recollection is pretty much a remake in the sense that almost nothing remains other than some music and basic plot elements

DS version is vastly superior.
The remake is just an anime OVA. It's literally like playing Persona 4 or watching Persona 4 The Animation.

Playing the original, and then the remake collection instead of the Wii sequel is also a fair way.
The Wii game is perhaps CiNG's least good game in their Nintendo era (other than Again: Eye of Providence). It has really plodding pacing and not a very clear "why should I care?" hook like the first one has until you're about 2/3 through it, and honestly the plot kind of fell apart at the end, at least to me. In that sense the more condensed remake version might be better, and it also doesn't have the issues of the Wii having sometimes very frustrating motion control gimmicks.

I love the gimmicks in their DS games, but Another Code R on Wii was a real mixed bag for me, although it has some really nice moments too.

I would skip it to be honest, maybe the sequel is better , who knows. Its just very meh as a game, hyped up by its reputation for being obscure. If you want something in the same style try Hotel Dusk which is a masterpiece.

Hotel Dusk actually felt like it had a soul though. Kyle Hyde's deadpan delivery, the gritty pencil-sketch aesthetic, the way the puzzles organically integrated into the dialogue-all of it just hits so much harder. Another Code, even in its original DS form, felt more like a decent pilot episode for a bigger story that never fully delivered. The sequel tried to be the character deep-dive but ended up meandering. Hotel Dusk made you care *and* made you think.

Speaking of DS heroines, how was the Touch Detective collection on Switch? And what happened to Izuna's game?

Last Window was also excellent.

What did you think about the changes made for him in the remake? It was frankly fucking weird seeing him as essentially a different character.
