Personally I just say start at SMT1 and go from there, but you never know, you might really enjoy the MT games so you could at least try those out. I bounced off of them pretty hard.

Strategy RPG: Devil Survivor games + Persona 5 Tactica
Dating Sim: Persona
Grid Based Dungeon Crawler: SMT 1/2 + Strange Journey
Typical JRPG with fixed party members: Digital Devil Saga games
JRPG with monster recruit mechanics: SMT 3/4/4A/5
Musou: Persona 5 Strikers

For a beginner I'd reccomend the DDS games as they are pretty short and will let you learn a lot of the demons the other games use by fighting them.

I started with Persona 3 Portable but any of the modern (3, 4, and 5) Persona games can be jumped into without the context of the previous ones.
Nocturne is also often reccomended as a starting point. As long as you abuse buffs and debuffs it's not too hard. If you play the HD Remaster be sure to either play Chronicles Mode or fork up money for Dante and play Maniax, as the original release mode isn't nearly as good.
The new Raidou Remaster is cool but it's an Action RPG instead of a Turn-Based RPG so it plays pretty differently, but it has the same themes and stuff of any other SMT.
I wouldn't reccomend touchint SMT V or V Vengeance until you finish Nocturne as those games are connected, but if you really want to you can and it will be fine.

I would say it's good, but you have to play twice to unlock all the missions, which is annoying.
If you're gonna do that shit, make it an act 2 or something or just have completely different missions when choosing the vengeance route.

I mean... that's true of every single SMT game. They all have route locked content. Actually Vengeance is one of the games that is most replay friendly.

IV is the best mainline game but devil survivor is the best if we are including spinoffs. Maybe strange journey but it can drag pretty hard
