Initial Unity is weird anyways, it's less arcade-y and more trying to be a realistic and difficult game unlike the PS2 initial D titles
I'd recommend the arcade Initial D games but they NEVER worked with my controller but I wish you luck because it seemed like a me problem. There's emulators for those machines that run it pretty much flawlessly

One of these years I'll get off my ass and do the kanji grind so I can actually enjoy this series
