I am old enough to remember that experimentals in SupCom vanilla were very cumbersome and we can see it even in this trailer as the Spoider has trouble going from target to target.
However their stats were absurdly high: 12500 DPS for this one, 25000 for the Collosus which could also survive 3 nukes.

TA was ambitious and a cool foundational title of the genre, but it's also badly balanced and doesn't have the replayability that keeps SupCom online today.

It honestly wasn't. The combat was more interesting for sure, but they added way too many warcraft elements to it.
If Rise of Nations was 50% civ, 50% AoE, Rise of Lengends is 25% civ, 25% AoE and 50% warcraft.
Also, Rise of Legends has a critical design flaw.

How do you get gud with aircraft?
Once the enemy has AA set upyour planes get mowed down in seconds and the only thing that kinda works is gunship spam.

Gunships take out the shield generators, then have bombers take out the power. Send in fighters first for air superiority and to distract the AA.

everyone always wants massive revolutions in the genre as if that will attract new audience. I was fine playing sidegrade games like battle realms, impossible creatures, dragonshard, perimeter, etc. games that didn't break new grounds but had interesting gimmicks or ideas.
Anonymous No.718251996
>>718251170
It was microhell when both armies were of comparable strengths, but glaringly so when your strength was just zerging.

That being said, if your armies could largely do battle on their own and clear zerg rushes with relative ease, then you could do some light micro and force the enemy to micro many different battles all at once and exhaust themselves into making very dumb mistakes and lose focus on the whole picture and instead focus on however many little ones there were going on in the map.

Doing heavy micro is an advantage, but a shrewd tactician can force their enemy to be overwhelmed by that advantage to be blind to an incredibly simple strategy.

Why are complex units in RTS so rare now?
It's all simplistic shit.

Look at this webm.
A (relatively) spammable unit with an on-board strategic missile defense system that returns any and all missiles back to sender.
Why can't we have cool shit anymore?

That would not work because we have subgenre and shit devs spun off to. On the most basic level if you dislike base building there's RTT to get into, for example. If you enjoy base building over everything else you have city-building games executed to various degrees of autism. Etc. etc.

theres a massive subset of turn based strategy/4X and singleplayer games like Total war where you can pause and give orders just for you. Even supcom is chill with barely any micro when compered to games like aoe2 or sc and even those games can be played singleplayer at any speed setting you like

It's Supreme Commander. It had the best interface of its time and it's the exact opposite of games like Starcraft, you can do really really well with mediocre dexterity. There used to be people really high ranked with middling APM and people who only used the mouse.

this is because you are clueless and ignorant about the games you are talking about. FYI SC2 matches literally depend on constant scouting and knowledge of enemy build and unit composition. Denying enemy scout is massive and almost game winning in some situations.

Almost 18 years after release and FA still feels like the swan song of the TA style RTS. Plenty of spiritual successors and wannabe dethroners have come since then but none have matched the combination of budget, cutting edge graphics (for the time), and longevity that supcom has.
