Technically speaking the original carriers of the plague were Oriental rat fleas, but rats didn't do anything other than be a vessel for the fleas to get to humans, after which you are correct that the plague was spread from human to human contact. Rats were largely inconsequential as far as spreading the plague, and have been misblamed for centuries.

Not true, I had pet rats and they exclusively pissed and shit in their cage. They both lived for 2 years and after the initial training period never shit outside their cage (at least that I found), pissed maybe 5 or so times. It didn't take much training either, I just set up a litterbox type thing and gave them treats when they used it, and would immediately end their free roam time if they did it outside the cage. Within a month or so they understood the pattern

Cats and dogs usually know there's a particular spot to piss unless they're sick, distressed or something else stops them.

The only reason I don't have a rat is I can't take losing another pet, and their lifespans are too short.

Domestic rats and wild rats are pretty different. They've selectively bred domestic rats for coat colors and docility. In captivity they aren't (usually) rooting around in gross places so they don't really pick up anything like diseases.
