This is my theory on why 7 flopped. 6 was the perfect game with atrocious AI. There was no place to improve. So they had to downgrade 7 to actually allow a some what competitive AI, which actually is fun to go to war against. However it was such a step back the whole thing felt like shit... plus it was rushed after their previous game flopped and wokness.

Civ2 lets you do infinite city sprawl. All you have to do in order to win is to just spam settlers forever.

Colonization was fun, it's worth at least a couple playthroughs. Also Fall From Heaven mod for Civ 4 is amazing.

Its 6 but with all the interesting mechanics depth and complexity removed with a chisel and replaced with nothing.
I think they had some sort of vision of turning Civ into a faster paced competitive multiplayer type of game and misread their audience by an astronomically large margin
