>surface level, the game's about a guy slowly going nuts and killing everything on his way to save/"save" the city
>medium level, the game's there to punish the player for liking violence in videogames
>the actual plot: main guy died in the first helicopter crash and the rest of the game is his purgatory (with a little aimed at you too), and this is why you're being railroaded so hard and why shit like the WP accident happens, why some background shit changes based on player input, and why Walker's eyes are literally broken
The fact the lead writer (/dev?) had to go out of his way to clarify this in an interview years later is just funny to me because I'm pretty sure literally zero people (outside of the "haha Ash is in a coma" memelords) knew Walker was dead.
Cool idea for a game, but shit execution.
Also the game's gameplay was a bit too generic, it caused a lot of people to instantly dismiss it as a generic shooter in a tidal wave of generic shooters, instead of blowing a bunch of normalfags' minds. It needed more "pop" to pull in normalfags, and "dynamic sand tech" isn't it, chief.

Licensed music. Kind of a shame considering the game probably didn't "need" licensed music (like most games don't need it outside of crime sims like GTA and music-focused games like Guitar Hero, Hi-Fi Rush, and Brutal Legend.)
