Random encounters and turn based combat are too boring, it didn't age well, at all. The pacing is inconsistent, the villain is just evil for the sake of it. It needs a complete remake to be playable like FF7 with modern QoLs like fast forward

Magus is one of the strongest standalone characters in the game. His physical stats are just barely behind Crono and Frog and his magic is just barely behind Lucca. He can exploit any elemental weakness at will and has arguably the best ultimate ability in the game due to how few enemies are resistant to Dark as opposed to Lightning or Fire.

Chrono is a lame protagonist and some of the quests don't make it clear where I'm supposed to go next.

There was a shitload of other nearly identical looking RPGs out at the time that i'd already played so it really had no appeal to me. It was just more of the same aside from being a different story and less interesting gear.

And I was already deep into Secret of Mana, and I didn't like Evermore either because it felt like a Mana knockoff (it was) that was even more pointlessly convoluted (it was)

The shaped area attacks are only useful for a couple fights around the start that are clearly designed for them. The combo attacks are weaker than just having both/all characters attack separately. My biggest gripe is of a more personal nature, though: The side quest for saving Schala wasn't implemented, with only trace of it being Gaspar telling you to save someone close to you when he lists the hints for sidequests in the part of the game you get to them. Adding insult to injury is how the sequel, if you can call it that, turned out but that's a whole another can of worms.

CT's roster gives you options. Choices. You need a healer, you get 3. Marle is the spellcasting leaning healer, Frog is the physical leaning healer, Robo is between the two. Ayla is your pure fighter. Lucca is your Black Mage. Robo and Crono and Magus are essentially all Red Mages with different damage profiles. You can clear everything with any of them but you get choices in how to do so.

You can go directly to the Day of Lavos in NG+ but you can't do it in regular NG. I get that it would spoil the story somewhat if you just immediately showed up in front of the last boss, but I also think it would be really cool and I'm sure some autist would have figured out how to kill him at base level by now.

On your first playthrough Lavos Shell's opening attack deals double damage until you finish the Black Omen. It's a hard HP check that can't be ignored without nearly maxed HP otherwise

No post game beyond a fight nobody is going to unlock because it requires a team of lv99 characters to see. Omega and Shinryu existed and Kaiser was planned and cut from FF6 there's no excuse for a lack of an ultimately challenging opponent in CT.

What were they thinking making an omnipotent villain that orchestrated the entirety of a planets evolution be beaten by things on the planet he controlled.

You can beat it by using basic attack command and simply changing targets for the fights that require it. This is a fact, which is why it's lauded. It's easy enough for LITERALLY ANYONE to beat.

I had to use a hard mode rom hack called Lavos's awakening to get a challenge.
It was mostly worth it, the fire dragon tank boss was horrible as were the dino bosses you have to electrocute. Everything else was awesome.

The gameplay is too barebones to be acceptable for anybody who's not a 6-9 years old kid who never played and RPG before.
Character building is nonexistent, itemization is NES tier, ability design is so primitive it's downright embarassing, on the enemy's side it's just as bad and probably made worse by the overreliance on pallete swaps rather than having any actual enemy variety.
The "positioning" is purely window dressing due to the composite issue of not being able to move your own characters for some reason and the game mechanics being too barren for the game to have any depth at all, and of course being a game for kids the difficulty is also nonexistent.

Story wise there's not much to talk about as time travel stories must be taken at face value, but the game is overall very poorly handled in that regard mostly because there were three different writers arguing with each others over the most trivial things so you don't have anything resembling to a coherent, let alone interesting setting.
It is very much a character driven, the problem is that none of the characters are interesting either unless again, you're 6-9 years old, the only one who's sorta nice is Frog/Glenn because he's the only one who has a semblance of a story and proper development behind him, with Magus being a close but still very basic second, the game is very much structured like a generic tv anime for little kids but without having anything noteworthy to show or say.

I suppose one area where CT is sorta notable compared to some of its contemporaries is the amount of multiple endings, but the game being structured into a linear series of checkpoints rather than an actual RPG doesn't do that many favors, the fact that the vast majority of those are also strictly NG+ material doesn't help, it's simply not comparable to other games of the time where players had much more direct input on both choices and progression.

tl:dr; it's fine if you're a little kid but mediocre to bad for anyone else.

The attack animations take way too long and slow the combat down too much, especially since the ATB completely stops during the animation.
