Yeah, the original games were peak SOVL and the new games can't compare.

it folded well. 4th and 5th gen were peak. the 2nd and 3rd generation was strong and story rich

i like gen 2 due to seeing it first but gen 3 felt the most balanced.
>>718259959
idk. gen 5 was rough because even if shooting felt snappy and flying was fun, the war focus story was uninteresting. but its a step up from 4's story.

play gen 1 to 3 games (skip last raven) to appreciate the campy stuff mision structure

You should play Formula Front, Nine Breaker, Last Raven, 4 and 5.
Anonymous No.718261117 >>718264347
The peaks of Armored Core were 2nd, 3rd, or 4th gen. Whoever you ask will give you a different answer. They are all really highly rated, but have changes between them that tailor them to a person's taste. Gen 4 is much different compared to 3, which is fairly different from 2. You can stereotype the person who prefers each one as
>gen 2 are the smoothbrains
>gen 3 are the numbers autists
>gen 4 are the normalfags
I know it sounds like I'm taking the "safe" route here, but the truth is, they're all right.

Outside of that, gen 1 is accepted as good, though ultimately improved upon. Gen 5 is widely considered to have killed the series due to being designed so fucking poorly, resulting in Armored Core disappearing as From Software decided to print Souls games for over a decade.

>>718260486
formula front is like a auto battler you setup how your ac acts unless you use the control ac code and win most battles
ninebreaker is obstacle courses and pvp. its better if you have a ac 3rd gen save so you can unlock the weapons
Last raven is harsh unless you have a previous save as the heat system is brutal until you earn a good generator and cooler
4 is like 6 but faster. 5 is 4 but stiffer yet you feel the most powerful weapons wise

SL = LR > 3 ≥ N > MoA ≥ AA > 2 ≥ PP = 1 > power gap > FA ≥ 6 > VD ≥ 4 > NB > 5 > FF

ACE2 ≥ ACE3 > ACE1 power gap > UC > ACEP > even bigger power gap > ACER

SL and LR positions are nonnegotiable. They are THE franchise and the best iterations of their era which was the peak era.

PS3 era is arguable to some extent. It's fine to prefer FA over VD or vice versa but 4 is too anemic/shallow/downgrade to be elevated higher despite the good presentation and OST (FA's salvage job took it in a fun drastic direction but also the one that would erase AC if they were to adopt it fully.)
Vanilla 5 is too MP marred, like a GAASlop and doesn't deserve recognition due to its misguided direction it was trying to take. VD was an admirable salvage job all things considered.

NB isn't a bad game mechanically but it's too anemic in content. It was done as a quick stopgap for the PvP tournament scene which was a thing in Asia at the time.
FF is fun for what it is but it's an AC game in franchise name only. Other 3 PSP ports of 3/SL/LR are pretty much same games except with miniscule additions (few new parts, few new arena enemies, some AI adjustments) and are not worth ranking separately.

And finally there's 6. Despite superficial similarities this game deviates from the formula even harder than 4 and 5 did. Its lock-on turns it more into a arcade Gundam Versus game mechanically so it's difficult to slot it in with the rest of the series ranking. It's a good action game, it's a great mecha game, it's not really a faithful Armored Core game.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I emulated 4A for research and damn is it stiff. Fast when you get going but it's so jerky and stiff, even NES games are less clunky. Its a shame though because more games with its scale and momentum are needed. Also the UI is like looking at a powerpoint template

Looks like it did just fine to me. Took a long break after VD because it was clear that nobody at From knew what the fuck they wanted to do with AC as a series, and around the same time they were going balls to the wall on Dark Souls.

Yeah that's the point. It's an unwieldly gigantic robot killing machine. It's not a dude in a suit. When you master piloting a jet fighter with legs it's more satisfying and it really separates an ace pilot and a clunky grunt. This feel is even more exaggerated in pre-Nexus games where the first time player will be running into walls while getting blisters on his real life fingers while the ace pilot that got good will make it look like a completely different game https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXq58tcKJJA

If you want mindless action robot games that don't emulate the feeling of piloting a giant fantasy military vehicle then go play Zone of the Enders, Project Nimbus, Strike Suit Zero, Gundam Versus etc.

Not sure why youre using a different game to prove your point.
Any clunky system can be mastered, pro forklift competitions are impressive too. What bothered me was simple movement at low speeds. I'm not asking for snappy ZOE digital input, but it just felt wrong.
Anyway its not like any of these would really give the feeling of being in a massive robot since all of them jack up the gravity by like 10 times. Could go on into surface friction and flight forces too but I wont

Literally the only thing 2nd gen has going for it is like a 7/10 conventional robot anime story in 2 and a bazillion missions in AA, even with AA unfucking the gameplay it is way worse than 1. AC3 plays fine but has the overwhelming feeling of having no story ideas whatsoever to justify a timeline reset as it homages the shit out of a 5 year old game.

That video is infinitely more impressive if you actually know how SL controls. I linked it to elaborate on my point that these games are aiming to emulate the immersive feeling of mastering a machine. Despite it being fantastical it's part of the Real Robot Genre hook.

Like I said it's more impressive in SL. FA is already fast by default and everyone and their mother knows just how insane it gets at higher levels of play https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6IpcH_HqzY

Nah, don't skip them. They're worth trying out.
If you play 5/VD I'd recommend looking into the movement quirks the game has since it'll make playing them far more enjoyable. IMO 5th gen feels the best with LRJ since they get the strongest boost from walljumping, which is unique to 5 gen's gameplay. Chaining walljumps with glides and booster management leaves you feeling very in control of your AC and is really engaging. You can really go quite fast from place to place thanks to that. The mode switching can get annoying, though

That 4A video isn't impressing me. First of all, I never said 4A was unplayable, just clunky feeling. Second, the video is just the bot boosting all over the place. It's elevated by good camera rolling, animations and effects, which is what makes it look cool, but other than that the movement is not interesting.
Also I do not agree that a system must be clunky at first blush in order for its mastery to be satisfying, or even for it to "feel like a robot". I would attribute that more to its feeling of weight and inertia.
Unfortunately I haven't played 4A in a while since trying it that day so I can't place exactly what I disliked about its controls, so I'm limited on arguing my point. I can say it wasn't anything to do with weight and slowness otherwise I'd also think racing and flight sims are clunky, which I don't. Overall 4A felt like it was a different game with its boost values multiplied by 100, which is what it is.
On the other hand I quite like how SL looks and am interested in trying it

Also maybe its my schooling background but the gravity bothers me greatly, its like theyre on jupiter. Just being sucked to the ground in a couple seconds despite supposedly being thousands of meters in the air.
It's either they're on jupiter, or they're the size of insects. Its the only way that kind of gravity would make sense intuitively.
Anonymous No.718266328 >>718266517

I imagine the gravity is the way it is to help make the gameplay more tridimensional. If you both ascend and descend quickly it becomes a valid way to dodge and encourages thinking in 3D to flank and outmaneuver

That's what 4A is. What are you doing, walking around and turning manually? When I play 4A, the last thing I would call it is clunky.

Alright, booting it up.
Not being able to strafe unless you have a target bothers me. Not being able to fly left or right without ascending bothers me. Turn rate is very slow even though this things boosters can take it 0 to 500 kph in 0.1 seconds. Can't QB diagonally. Can't. QB up or down. Just open your mind to that idea.

Turn speed is a stat ingame, this has always been an actual mechanic in AC games. It's harsher in earlier games, as in 4/4A you can more easily boost to change direction. Figure out how to get the 180 boost down too. QB and tap behind you I think.
Release the boost button as you QB. When you want to ascend, just ascend straight up by releasing any direction, that's how you get the most air.
Hopefully some of these tips help.
