The new songs sadly can't top the original. Until a mod brings them back, the best way to experience the game is the Forgotten Dreams translation, which uses higher quality music files with seamless looping.

Many people exaggerate how good it is, but the original soundtrack feels like each song was hand crafted for the area you first encounter it. The first impressions these songs give do a lot to selling the atmosphere of the world. Give it a try, and if you can't see what I'm talking about then I'll eat my words and say I'm just biased to the original, though I'll stand firm that the new soundtrack only ever attempts to match the original in very small areas (mainly from songs by Morusque)

No lie, that’s the real OFF experience. The visuals, the stiff RPGM animations, and especially the original crunchy MIDIs all mesh into something uniquely unsettling. The fan remakes and patches are nice in terms of accessibility, but when you muddy the aesthetic too much (especially with new music that tries to be too “epic” or polished), it loses something fundamental. OFF’s charm comes from how off it is, pun fully intended. Just grab the free version and keep Volume Alpha on standby if you wanna reset your brain after.

Should this have been a remake instead of a remaster?

Can't help but think that the real problems OFF had could be best addressed by remaking the game from ground up. And that not only would have made slapping a price on it better justified but the change in soundtrack would have gone over better as well.

As much I am not into Toby's work, even I know that he was not a very good choice based in his style and I doubted really hard he would have the skill to be able to adapt, just like he didn't. I know that toby as a choice was heavily influenced by the inspiration OFF had in his games and his current position in the indie scenario but it wasn't a good choice for the game.

Bulk of the game is the same as before though, they called it a remaster for a reason. I'm talking about stuff like replacing the random battle encounter system with something less tedious. A change like that would be a tall call potentially changing how the entire game works from ground up. But that's precisely the sort of thing that would be expected from a proper remake.

The new soundtrack sucks, but we all expected it to be underwhelming compared to ACC's. The bigger crime is how bad the new script is. The new translation of the old lines is stiff and awkward, with no understanding of the rules of English, and the new dialogue reads as trying too hard to be quirky and profound at the same time when it's just trite. I can't even guess at what Mortis thought he was trying to say with Psalmanazer and Herodotus.

I found Morusque's music to be much worse in terms of replacing the originals and in a lot of cases the new area music seems to have flat out not understood the original game. I am not sure why not enough people bring this up but Mortis' art improved but his current artstyle is completely different than his work in OFF. It's much more cleaner, cute and cartoony, more comercial. When I saw the promotional art and stuff for the steam version, I sincerely asked myself how people could get any gritty and dirty atmosphere from a game with art like that until I realized it's just his current art.

I'm genuinely so angry at the remake of the meaning of his tears and Vader Eloha in general, it sounds like a generic boss theme and a stupid attempt to make her seem "regal". Its overly slow at the start and when the drums kick in it loses all the coldness and emptiness the original had in droves. Toby tries to compensate by adding in some weird choir singing but it just doesn't work and makes it so unlike the original. Just because she's named the queen doesn't mean she should have a regal theme, the whole point of the original was less of "fighting the queen of the world" and more "a woman is desperately trying to stop a psycho from murdering her and her pseudo son" and Toby failed at figuring that out.
