The problem is that he is established to be straight in the first game. Not only does he have a girlfriend, but as part of one of the main quests you get drunk and sleep with another woman. He is not a create-a-character like Shepard or Hawke or any other bioware like character. He is Henry.
The problem with the gay romance is that it undercuts his character development and his friendship with Hans. No longer can you assume the two became brothers in arms through training, combat, and misadventures. Now you assume it is because they both feel sexual attraction to one another. Hans had an entire DLC about trying to go on a date with some chick, I guess he was doing that for a laugh?
>UM I GUESS THEY'RE BOTH BISEXUAL/PANSEXUAL!
What are the fucking odds of two bisexual/pansexual Christians meeting one another in something like 1400s Bohemia? Both of whom are in the closet and just happen to reveal themselves to one another?
The actual answer is two fold:
1. They added the gay romance and the black muslim guy to distance themselves from the LE BASED and LE REDPILLED crowd which the first game could never shake due to the founder acting like a retard on social media. Even the positive reviews of the games always had to include a "...but..." because that crowd latched onto the game. This clearly won over journos
2. They were pandering to a tiny, but vocal audience of shipfags on twitter who said Henry and Hans should fuck because they're degenerate perverts who think any two characters being friends means they lust after one another.
Unlike other people, I don't really care about gay romances in general. I didn't complain about BG3 or DAI having them. My problem is HENRY is an actual character. It is like making Geralt gay. Geralt is not gay. Henry is not gay. If you want your gay 1400s Bohemian then make a new character.
