At this point I think I was fooled. Square-Enix gives the impression that they have the potential to be competent due to their past SquareSOFT era, but for unexplained reasons in modern times they can't hire enough talented people to make top-tier titles like they used to. They seem stuck with Noruma and Nojima's autism and also have to bolster their project budgets by pandering to Blackrock's Larry Fink (also Sweetbaby, "consultants," etc) for ESG money, otherwise they'd be shut down at this point without that money. Not to mention having to make their games timed-exclusives for Sony money. They had to hire the DMC battle guy for FF16 which disappointed people by omitting RPG elements and they seem to only have a few good writers available at given moment like Ishikawa. Their SquareSoft past carries the false impression that they are and can still a healthy company for the longterm, but it doesn't seem so.
