Designs go all over the place, especially the tanks. From what I vaguely remember most of the non-plot relevant tanks could be from the 1920s/30s while the Edelweiss looks like it could have come from the late 40s/early 50s.

Most of the infantry weapons are WW2-esque (plenty of SMGs and self-loading rifles) while the uniforms look WW1 or inter-war.

If the Nazis are depicted as evil, I don't wanna play it.

I'm playing it for the first time. Should I jump straight to VC4 after, or are the PSP games worth it? I hear VC2 is hated for being grindy and set in a school, and 3 requires a fan translation.

I personally don't remember having to grind for VC2. VC3 yeah, the side missions and DLCs will be JP only, only main story is translated in English. I liked both games.
VC2 is VC1's direct sequel while the events of VC3 and VC4 occur along with VC1. See for yourself if you want to play the PSP games, I think it's a matter of liking the overall setting. Just be prepared for the lack of scout rush (which is a plus).

Just DON'T DO IT and you will have fun. Ranks don't matter because you can't 100% on the first playthrough (New Game+ is mandatory) and you can grind via the skirmishes feature anyway

2 has its moments, if you can get past the high school tournament arc with the will to continue. I didn't.
3 is the best game but it's severely held back by being on psp.

If you play the game the devs "intended" using your tank as the frontline, using scouts to....scout the area, using shocktroopers as the bulk of your infantry while snipers and lancers do their niche roles.....you finish the map with a C rank.

To get an A rank you juice up one Scout with 3-4 orders, run to the main enemy encampment, use a grenade to push the lone defending troop out of the capture point, take the flag and win.
Since higher ranks gives more exp and money, there is incentives to scout rushing. The only challenging stage is taking out the giant battleship.

bull-fucking-shit. I've A-ranked every story mission in every game in the series using completely normal tactic and it wasn't even hard. I never had to abuse scout rushing, and hardly ever used orders either.

But I HATE the ranking system, I HATE that your rank is only depended on how many moves you got. You lost half of your army but finished the mission in 2 moves? Here is your S rank. It's one of my favorite franchises, even though it's rather small and doesn't have many entries (which is a huge shame). I'm hoping we'll get more of these games.

I know people bash the second game a lot. But personally I wouldn't mind if they remade Valkyria Chronicles 2 and 3 and re-released them. I'm not a fan of handheld consoles, so I didn't get a chance to play them, and I don't want to emulate them either, as I want to support the developers who make these games.
