Sonic Heroes genuinely gorgeous, why did it get so much hate in 2003? It's far more colorful and fun than the dark and edgy Sonic Adventure 2.

The bass on this game's soundtrack is incredible

The controls are awful and combat shouldn’t be in a Sonic game.

Because it plays like shit and slows down Adventure's speed gameplay with no benefit.

Heroes' controls are too slippery.
Sonic has butter on his shoes and it only gets worse the more level cores you get.
Shadow the hedgehog fixed this a little, but only by removing upgrades in the first place.
The game would be a lot better if the handling didn't suck ass.

You can unironically blame Sony for forcing Sega Team to switch over to Renderware and hastily port the game to PS2 while keeping parity.

Heroes is basically 3D Sonic trying to be closer to Classic Sonic. It's not great, but it's an attempt, and in some ways does things better than the Adventure games. Linear stages. Surreal, colorful levels. A bit more lighthearted. In typical Sonic Team fashion, they took the backlash and, instead of just refining what they had, completely 180'd with StH and '06.

Heroes is the text book example of a game that forces you to learn how it functions before you can have fun with it, it has about about 20 or so quirks to how it controls. What baffles me is how people don't seem to understand or learn any of it and claim the game is awful despite the adventures games having the exact same quirks.
You can buffer your character switches in the air.
If hold the stick landing from a jump, you'll shoot forward to top speed but you can make that more controllable by easing off the stick.
Combat take no time at all if you level up tails and combo tails stun into knuckles' air slams.
Just in general being selective about leveling up fly and power first helps a lot
Grounded power attacks are safe around edges because they can ever send you off an edge
Using your power character to navigate hazardous sections instead going stupid fast and running into shit all the time.
Little things like that.
I just don't understand how adventure can be this misunderstood masterpiece while heroes is irredeemable garbage, truth is they're all pretty decent games buried under a heap of jank.

I'm with you for the most part, but I don't think the grindy combat and the leveling up is fun at all. It basically kills your drive to play the game if you slip up and die, and know you have to level up again in order to not have to spend a minute on each enemy.

Untold things like this and holding down the [Action] button during grinding instead of mashing it help you tard wrangle the game. It's got a TON of Sonic team jank, but it's great once you've got the nuances down.

Sonic Heroes was a good game. That 3D animation when you press Z that kills the room, a good mix between how 2d and 3d plays as 3d. Yes I'm talking about compared to these new sonic games.

There definitely a few sections where the combat encounters are used to pad and waste time for sure (goddamn those mini boss sections are BORING) but I stand by the fact that understanding the combat makes those general clusters that spawn in take a few seconds to deal with if you're playing how they want you to.

Sonic Heroes was the first multiplatform game after the Dreamcast died, and completely changed Sonic's gameplay.
Heroes has my least favorite version of Sonic.

You're really not getting the point of the game then, your functionality is split across three characters because swapping on the fly is the point of the game, if you force yourself to play sonic when the situation doesn't call for it you're just making the game harder on yourself. Lots of bottomless pits where you don't feel safe using sonic? No shit!

It's a beautiful looking game and it's one of the most quotable Sonic games out there, but I wish the gameplay were better. Rumors keep coming and going about a remake, and while I'm not sure I believe them, I'd be interested in seeing one.

Jap sonic is such a different series down to the script that its insane how different the story and characters are compared to the Japanese. That it's probably the main reason why western fans are so schizo over the games.

every single mechanic in the game barely works and it feels like its held together with duct tape and glue
aligning the characters to grab a pull-switch feels like a task and sometimes the ring dash just kills you
