It's because most media is made from an American viewpoint where England was our precursor. Anything set in a time period before America exists has to have English accents so that the average American understands that it's set in the past. Watch Kingdom of Heaven, a movie where everyone should be speaking French, including English historical figures like Richard the Lionheart, but everyone is speaking in English accents instead for American audiences. It helps that there's no shortage of classically trained theater actors from England who cut their teeth on Shakespeare willing to work for a hot meal.
