i remember playing the demo of pso, in the original versions of the game you'd drop your weapon when you died so there was a 10-15 minute runback (or however long a caves walk takes when you don't have a pipe up) to the boss so you could pick up your weapon
then you had to know that you could save and quit during the fight instead of trying to equip the weapon during combat and (fail to) kill it again

i hated that fucker back then, but today it's my favorite and most memorable boss of the game

Half true and half not. It’s more just that anime changed over the decades.

Phantasy Star was rooted in 80s and 70s anime. PS2 especially.
Even PSO and Universe mimic that turn of the millennium edge anime aesthetic.

So if PSO3 was made, it would be akin to modern anime.

Its a sci-fi franchise that has something for everyone. If you love good JRPGs inspired by older sci-fi anime, you have the original 4 on Master System to Genesis. If you want it to feel more like a 3D game from the 5th-6th console gen, you have Online Eps 1, 2 and 4. And if you want something more like contemporary sci-fi anime, you have Universe, the Portable games, 0 on DS, and PSO2.

This is a problem that all open world games have. When you go through the areas once, you don’t want to again.

I don’t really know if any game has solved this either.
But I think pso2 sort of gets it, in that instances dungeons warrant exploration because it’s all generated.

Is New Genesis and Genshin and Zelda, once you reach the summit of that one mountain and grab the trinket, that’s it. It only works for one playthrough.

>So if PSO3 was made, it would be akin to modern anime.
That's what PSO2 already was. The whole ass story mode was a bit more of its own thing at first even with some standard tropes here and there, then ep4 onwards basically turned it into a light novel tier shlockfest. Props to them for having an entire story mode on a F2P game at least, even if it's clear they were shortchanging the budget into EP5-6.

that's the thing that burns my ass about ngs honestly. they tried to "do this" with leciel but it's just the same shit as everything else, with a time limit based around getting points instead of running in circles simply killing things. pso2's level chunks had tons of hallmarks and repetition, but pso2 getting randomly generated runs with typically two areas or one large area at least gave me objectives to seek in them and an end point to cut my grind or dailies off. ngs dailies are effectively
>eat a food
>hit the region mag
>collect a few items of one resource type on open zone that varies per day
>kill 50 enemies in one of these boring ass combat areas
and when it's that damn boring and has no proper end point but when you want out, it ends up this no fucks given nightmare.

Basically, if you were in middle/high school in the early 2000s and a hardcore weeb, you really couldn't play anything else due to your adolescent brain hard fixating on one obsession. You HAD to play anime games, and if you got into MMOs you either played chibi anime games like maplestory/mabinogi (Korean grind slop), or you were a true otaku and played Japanese anime MMOs like PSO since there really wasn't much else readily accessible. Obviously you wouldn't want to play WoW or Runescape since they were ugly Western games that normalfags played.

Code Geass, Valvrave, Gundam 00, Full Metal Panic, you can feel the influences.

I don’t really know what they were thinking narratively with Episode 4. I guess a lot of isekai and “My life as a” anime were just starting to pop up? A lot of seasonal shit where you’d have a guy from another planetary war join McDonalds or whatever.

run in circles and kill shit before the timer runs out while collecting points to open drops, but occasionally there's things that ask you to kill a boss or run around in circles collecting points. your end point isn't an A to B, it's just the timer running out and booting you from the place. they shifted the priorities in the alter realm or whatever where you stay in there indefinitely - which just makes it a combat zone with super enemies/bosses anyway. it's not a foolproof comparison, but when hamazaki started taking the head lead on pso2 you could see him starting to push these sorts of areas like tokyo and bewitched woods, where it was just running in circles waiting for new things to spawn from a pool, and woods just had a boss to capstone it with a departure; that philosophy, alongside the defense/buster quest ideas, ended up filling ngs to the brim, making the most of recyclable content that doesn't need much else.

the limited time quests have tried to be their solution to complaints about all that, but i don't think it's really paying off since a.) there's no real good rewards for doing them and b.) they're literally asking you to run them 30 times for.. some rare capsules and materials or some XP.

the worst part about any of the new content ngs adds (applied to pso2 when nostalgia goggles are off too) is added content is only relevant for two weeks before new content obsoletes it

32 person field fights weren't especially compelling, but they were something that felt different then the rest, but once the third week of the month hits the thing that came out in the first week of the month has 0 players (or is just removed, when it's a limited time thing)

I like the concept of an MMO where you just chill out with other players in hub zones to chat and make friends, then enter the various instances in each hub for dungeon runs. Like the "hub" zones are the only MMO parts of the game. I didn't like PSO 1 or 2, but I enjoyed Universe. Not sure why since I don't really remember the gameplay or story of any of them. I think PSO2 went too hard on the JRPG story nonsense of 500 million words and I care about precisely nothing going on. I remember Universe being easy to follow.

the fucked up part is that release Blue Protocol has/had a hybrid of PSO1 and NGS. a big empty world with one-time earnings and some mobs lying around - and then dungeon areas to tackle that had a set end and boss that were like mini-raids. by all accounts, even with the chinese rework it got, it's more true to how people remember and imagine these sorts of games to be than most modern games for something on a gacha budget.
NGS outright HAS the excuse to have its own dungeons instead of shrines and quest mission things, too, using the training sim setup, but nope, only Leciel is "generated" and it's just rearranging a bunch of square rooms around with a handful of types.

OH WAIT i forgot to mention the dext base rank 1 problem too
any piece of content they add has to compete with the most efficient way to earn meseta, otherwise people will just go back to the most efficient meseta farm
people aren't going to farm new capsules or whatever other new tradeable material is when they can just purchase it after mindlessly grinding dext base (and having alternate accounts leeching from the drops while not participating in combat)
and even then if you're the person selling the capsules, the dext base people still don't pay much for them

i'm surprised they haven't figured out to reduce meseta drops when fighting enemies lower than the player's level like they do with exp

Every MMO eventually becomes PSO2, that being a hub where people idle and do instanced stuff.

MMOs sell themselves in this grand levelling experience and huge world to traverse and hundreds of players fighting alongside you in the war against the Argathi, but it really all just boils down to waiting in a queue while a man in slutglam emotes in the corner and another guy stands there with fire armor.

Which explains why EP5 in 2017 proceeded to seriously blow its load all over the place by tripling down on the trend. Hamazaki is a hack that sacrificed everything that made PSO2, besides the japanese world shit, in favor of anime trends.

Maybe it would be such a bad idea, to have mainline games feed players into the mmo.

The problem crops up with the combat system. Phantasy fans have been playing action games for decades now, what are you gonna do in V? First person dungeons? Turn based?

It’s one of those things where Phantasy Star Online IS the series now.

If you get into endgame discussions online with gacha games, it’s always YouTubers and streamers who are wanting to make daily videos of the game, burning out on things to do.

Ultimately, what you do at max level is pointless, because there’s always going to be a loud portion of the player base saying there’s nothing to do. There’s a famous jpeg of exactly this with EverQuest and WoW.

Instead, it’s better to offer strong emotional moments. I’d wager that the majority of players care more for PSO2’s set pieces and characters more than any end game grind.

Ideally once a /vg/ general has run its course in discussion, posters let it die. This does happen some generals, but the majority of the time half a dozen autists have nothing else going on outside of their lives and make it their life's mission to keep it bumped forever. Dext Base is one of the two Stia combat areas that was "endgame" back in like 2022, and we've been spinning our wheels since then as they keep updating old areas to new ranks of enemy levels - but at the end of the day most players that aren't hanging in the Aelio Central City are probably sticking in Stia and farming Dext Base for meseta and dailies, since Rank 1 puts enemies around lv65 which makes them very easy to kill at this point in time in a couple hits without having to waste time with the higher Rank 2 or other updated areas. It's decent enough a grind especially on PSE Bursts without pissing about elsewhere, and the area is pretty easy to traverse, no one even bothers with Neusen Plant since despite a simpler design it's way more inconsistent from enemy and boss spawns.

>Armada of Demise, a UQ that is three missions back to back with some variation on what you might get, which had great music + some seriously awesome score attack patterns to tear right through if everyone's skilled or coordinated enough; getting the AIS Vega fight was damn fun
>after ep4 was slightly-futuristic modern day earth and ep5 was isekai fantasy world, ep6 was a return to pure sci-fi besides a detour to japanworld, and while the conclusion definitely got rushed together in the second half, a good send-off for the cast and story after ep5 nearly killed the game altogether
it's about as high a note you could end the game on as you could after what happened to it. some people hate that a lot of ep6's content was largely souped up and enhanced older content with tons of reusage, but i wouldn't be surprised if the budget had gotten slashed for ep5's catastrophe.

Heaven Punisher and Frozen Shooter are the two "big" drops
For some reason it makes 90% of Ephinea extremely butthurt that people are playing for fun instead of playing the extremely unfun MAE quests to reach milestones, which you unlock by completing the quests
They even made 2 custom quests, but instead of making them easy for public rooms or a toned down version for solo players, they're dogshit with the usual "Lol oneshottings flowers in each corner"

The problem with private servers is that everyone has their own ‘best’ definition of the game.

How many private servers are there for pso? Ffxi has this issue too, and WoW, where it’s this period, and this level cap, but not this change and not this content.

You want when pso2 private’s pop up, it’ll be like

I still have my savefiles for PSP2i backed up on my PC & some external hard drive. It had like 200++ hours on it, and like once or twice a year I'll boot the game up and just play for several hours. Fun fun fun.

PSP2i was literally one of the reasons that pushed me to learn Japspeak. I imported the UMD back in the day and suffered through having to look up a dictionary for every cutscene dialogue just to play that game. Absolutely worth it. I know I might be in the minority but I do kinda miss the Gurhal solar system that was the setting in PSU+PSP+PSP2. Wouldn't mind getting one more game in this setting.
