I will post it again:
complaining about random crits is confessing that your ego cant handle dying in a fucking team objective game with infinite respawns. the assertion that they MUST be removed is the same as the assertion that the sniper's SMG MUST do 5 more damage than it does, or the demo's run speed MUST be 5% faster than it is, otherwise the game is UNFUCKINGPLAYABLE. its such a tiny nothing issue that amounts to a negligible balance complaint and the fact is the people who complain about random crits are the same weird kids who spike their controllers when they lose at smash brothers.

its a pretty simple formula. It doesnt feel good to get a random crit cause you didnt play well to get it, and it feels bad to die by one because your opponent didn't do anything to.

it being a "small issue" doesnt matter, especially cause its not small, it happens multiple times per match
Anonymous No.718291090
He didn't start playing until well after TF2's golden age, and I'm sorry but that disqualifies you from having anything meaningful to say about what makes TF2 good or bad
Anonymous No.718291995 >>718292457
Critical hits add a spice of much-needed randomness to tf2 to keep it from getting stale. It means you generally need to stay on your toes, and can't ever be 'completely sure' of your odds in any given situation. TF2 is generally a very chaotic and funny game, with a light, comedic tone and style, and the added randomness and intentional unfairness of random critical hits fits that. It makes fights less predictable, gives lighter classes a better chance in melee combat, and, of course, lets F2Ps score a kill against a 4000+ hour golden pan sweatlord with a lucky crocket in right place at the right time. Oh, and reflecting a crocket then schadenfreuding afterwards is a cathartic sensation no other game can really deliver. If you don't like randomness and chaos then TF2 probably isn't the game for you and you should play something else.

I cant fathom the sheer ego required to think arriving five years late to the party is veterancy and makes you an authority on the game.

you don't have to like uncle dane as a person or a player or like his videos to recognize that his arguments for removing random crits have basically never been countered in any meaningful way
the strongest argument against removing them has always been "why does it matter? they don't happen often enough to effect the bigger picture so why bother?" but if you're going to appeal to triviality like that you're also admitting it doesn't matter if they do ever get removed, and clearly one side cares a lot more about playing with their preference than the other, so it's a no brainer
any other argument is shit like "it gives new players a chance" which sounds reasonable before you think about it for longer than 2 seconds. But this is /v/ where people believe sniper is overpowered because they can't figure out how to not walk in a straight line so i guess that's a lot to ask

I disagree. They're not fun to get because any kills feel unearned, they're not fun to be on the receiving end of because being nuked in a way you couldn't predict isn't engaging gameplay. Either way it's the game tilting the playing board which lessens the impact of your input as a player. Luckily, they're uncommon so this random interference by the game doesn't apply to every fight.
...But that loops back to the only valid argument being "this doesn't happen enough to overall effect the whole gameplay experience." Which means removing them wouldn't be taking away something integral, just as much as their continued presence isn't dealbreaking.

If that were true than we'd be seeing a lot more players downloading things like speedhacks and aimbots and wallhacks etc etc etc. I won't say there ISN'T an audience of people that find it fun to play the game in a way that is undeserved, while reveling in the dissatisfaction of the enemy gamers, but considering it's only a small portion of the playerbase that go out of their way to play the game like that, a mechanic designed to appeal to that sensibility is mostly out of place.
>>718294946
>TAKE THE GAME MORE SERIOUSLY
Nobody's asking you to do that, so problem solved. Again, this is an appeal to triviality, which goes both ways. If you don't want to take the game seriously, you don't have to take part in discussions about the game's design and what they could change and keep. Random crits or not, it shouldn't matter to you, because you don't take this game seriously, do you?

You can think they're fun, and thats fine, but thats not an argument. You could add a mechanic in any game, where every bullet has a 1% chance to kill you and people would be arguing its fun too. Not the guy your responding too, but I just think its bad game design, doesnt mean its not funny sometimes.

That's my point, yeah. If it were commonly understood that people have fun in videogames by getting incredibly unfair advantages which screw over other players completely, and imagining those players seething in rage from getting screwed over, we'd probably see a lot of people feel the need to cheat. But that doesn't happen, for the most part. A vast majority of people derive satisfaction in getting results in the game directly tied to their input, and the reaction of their enemies doesn't mean a whole lot. That isn't to say there's NO enjoyment in making other people seethe; trashtalking is a tradition for a reason; but I think most people want skills to back up their trashtalk, not luck.

crits are a core part of the game and its balance, to the point that many weapons have critting disabled as part of their balancing
