the "hardcore gamer" millennials started getting better paying jobs and moved on to expensive hobbies they can afford and are now being replaced by the "hardcore gamer" zoomer crowd

It's become increasingly clear that the modern industry is a speculative bubble that is using metrics like playercounts as dog and pony shows for investors who don't know anything about videogames and don't engage with any discourse other than the most surface level normalfag shit.
Making fun of lacking playercounts makes the bubble deflate faster.

Videogames have a reached a maturity point and video games are becoming more like board games in some respects. Counter Strike is just chess and the gameplay is better off being set in stone with minor changes like cosmetics (no different than buying a nicer looking chess set). Most chess players probably peak at like 20 and then go on and get a degree and a job and then would end up losing to some juiced up 16 year old chess head. It's no different than modern gaming, no one is crying that there's no new game to top CS for the same reason no one's crying about no chess killer or basketball killer or whatever.
VR retards thought their dumb scuba gear might open a new frontier but they were fucking wrong. Gaming is stagnant and there's actually nothing wrong with that.
