some can be beaten fairly quickly if you catch on quick enough but others are more adventure type games that will take you a couple sessions. it's a grab bag of a bunch of different types of games so there will be some you probably don't like which is worth keeping in mind.

Yeah, what ties the collection together is the narrative that they were all developed between 1982-1989 by a fictional developer by the name of LX Systems (representing their fictional console that these games were developed for), which later rebranded to UFOSoft after the success of their game "Campanella". As you play, you may find codes to enter into the terminal in which you'll be able to play as an abstraction of the man who was tasked with putting together the collection itself, and when you see the way his co-workers and upper management are represented, it'll put into perspective the imagery and narratives found in some of the games in the last 15 titles or so. It's really cool.
Even if you don't engage with that part of the game, the collection will still keep you engaged. Beaten games turn gold, but beating them under special conditions gives you a "cherry". Some of those are a bitch to get, after 260 hours I've only got 33 of 50.
>>718290887 (OP)
Its the GOTY of 2024, and its not even close. I got 150h out of it when I cherried everything. The game has like 2-3 "bad" games and like 5 additional meh games. The rest are varying levels of good/great.

I thought I would hate Grimstone since I'm not a jrpg guy but ended up liking it quite a bit. They did bugfix the game which made it considerably harder. And I liked Golfaria quite a bit.
My bottom 2 games are Block Koala and Divers. Divers the jRPG that I ended up hating, and I just hate sokoban.

Velgress is a great feeling platformer where the ground where you stand constantly falls apart. Rail Heist is 2d heist-game with a lot of ways to play and cool turn-based system once you get spotted. Party House is a simple but addictive push your luck deckbuilding game. Mini & Max is great Chip'n'Dale style open (but kinda small) world adventure game with quests and great sense of exploration. Mortol is puzzle-platformer where you have to sacrifice your limited lives to progress, but you can do it in clever ways. Onion Delivery is fast paced driving game, where you need to memorize the dangerous areas of the city while driving lighting fast and dodge the daily hazards.
And it goes on and on and on. Almost all of the games are more interesting and deeper than what it initially looks like.

I'll give you one - Mortol. It's a platforming puzzle game that allows for multiple solutions in order to progress. Going back to previous levels and improving on the number of remaining people left gives you more lives overall in each subsequent level, so there's replay value. Further to that point, you get a free life for every three enemies you kill, and the sacrifice rituals can all chain into each other with the exception of bomb. So rather than creating a stone on a strip of spikes to jump across, you could chain stone > arrow > stone > arrow > stone if it means taking out three or even four enemies at once. It introduces new challenges throughout and feels complete in how its ideas were explored and developed.

It's okay. None of the games are fantastic, the best of the bunch is Mini and Max.
I didn't pay for it, and after playing it I wouldn't pay for it, I think too many of the games are too half-baked. I would've paid 20 bucks if they put all the effort they wasted on half the other games into Mini and Max instead and cancelled the other 49 games, but sadly it just ends a bit too fast and has a lot of stupid decisions like random item placements.

If you don't like arcade games or twitch-based shit, be prepared to be disappointed often. That's the main thing nobody ever mentions. Yes, it is still 50 games so statistically you may find something you like and in the end you may feel it was "worth" it overall, but so many games were "play for 5 minutes and then put down" for me.
I genuinely liked Rock On Island, Lords of Diskonia, and Party House. Even of those, Rock On Island is the only one I played significantly, probably about 10 hours and the only one I cherried. I think I'm largely done @ 45 hours, might come back for little nibbles here and there.
Mortol, Mooncat, Warptank, Pingolf, Quibble Race, Valbrace, Night Manor, Camouflage, and Vainger, Avianos are all "fine" I'd say (i.e. games I'd spend less than an hour on).
I think the fundamental issue with is I'd rather just buy 1 really good game that I love, instead of 49 that I like + 1 I love that is too short and simple.
But, I still feel I probably got my money's worth objectively, and that's the paradox. It's a volume approach.

The other day I was playing a free game on itch.io where you are a lesbian rabbit who shoots at a villain and takes off her clothes, and even though that game is pretty bad in terms of gameplay (the focus is only on eroticism), I found it funny that it's still better than the average UFO50 game.
This was one of the things that annoyed me a little about UFO50. At least 75% of those games would either be completely ignored or heavily criticized by the same people who are saying how good UFO50 is, if they had been released by a nobody in isolation.
The UFO50 reviews and the discussions on Steam strongly convey that "fan club" idea where people overvalue something that isn't very good because that's what you have to do to stay in the group. UFO50 isn't bad, but most of the games in the collection are.
Also, the artistic aspect is well below average, both in terms of graphics and music, and even the writing. What would then be the artistic value of the collection is the "historical narrative" that creates cohesion for all the games, but even that makes no sense (Barbuta, for example, by Western standards of computer games, would be a game from 1991, not 1982). The historical reality portrayed makes no sense whatsoever, has no fidelity to anything for those who understand the subject, and was clearly done through very poor research.

The benefit of UFO 50 when you compare it to random Itch.io games is that it was made by a dev group, instead of 50 random devs. Once you find few games you like in UFO 50, you start trusting the process that these guys know their stuff and there is depth and good design here, even if its not immediately obvious.

I put almost 130 hours into the collection without even beating all of them, some of the ones in genres I don't care for I only put ~15 minutes into. To be blunt, a small handful of the games DO suck (Star Waspir, Fist Hell, Hot Foot)
>>718297579
>Rock On Island
Cross between Tower Defense and Twin-Stick shooter, easily my favorite of the bunch and has you balancing positioning and timing around the maps alongside how to spend your currency (more units, upgraded units, upgraded weapon for you). It's the only game I 100% completed because it was just that good.
>Warptank
Really sharply-designed game where your tank can't jump but instead teleport in a line directly across from itself. The level design does absolutely everything with its premise without being too long and there's optional post-game completionist content for it as well.
>Mooncat
Comes off as a novelty game with how it controls (entire D-Pad moves left, either button moves right, everything else is a combination of those inputs) but each screen is very deliberately designed around that ruleset and there's multiple branching paths and endings you can reach if you get comfortable enough with the controls.
>Rail Heist
A weird cross between turn-based strategy, stealth-focused infiltration, and Super Mario Bros 2 where you're a group of outlaws robbing trains. It's hard to describe but kind of brilliant in execution.
>Bushido Ball
2 parts Windjammers, 1 part Samurai Shodown. It's hard to sell it any better than that.
>Lords of Diskonia
Turn-based strategy where you launch units represented by differently-sized pucks that vary in stats and try to bounce off of enemies to deal damage or off of stones that give your army resources. Tons of variety in how you put a team together based on your resources and what the level's map can offer you.
>Seaside Drive
Space Invaders but you're drifting on the highway in a convertible.

Another thing that made me dislike UFO 50 (I bought the game with good intentions but was disappointed): the parallel reality that the guys created for the gaming industry seemed a bit questionable to me.
That's because they're putting their typical shitty indie games there as pioneers of an entire industry. Yeah, I know it wasn't done with bad intentions, but this is a feeling that started to grow in me when I started to dislike the game, and I think it's more of a side effect of poor historical representation.
For comparison, we can take those poorly made books or movies where some civilization from the past is celebrated, but the authors end up putting a lot of their own realities in there. People don't like that, they see it as an attempt to rewrite history, and I feel something similar (but to a lesser extent) when I see those fucking ~2010's indie games representing the truly old games from the pioneers that I personally find fascinating.

But the game doesn't really do that.
The game presents a dev studio and game systems that was odd and in many ways before their time. But never held on to fame and was ultimately largely forgotten.
They're not representing old games. They're inspired by old games. But the UFO Soft games are their own thing for better or worse and the game does not shy away from that.

Mortol 2 is actually super cool though.
It only really falls behind Mortol 1 because it has no map variety.
If Mortol 2 had like 3 or 4 map variants to beat then it would have been hands down the superior game.
Also the hardmode code for Mortol 2 is rad.

1. Go into the game with the expectation that it will take you 5 hours to complete, this game requires patience.
2. Draw a physical map with pen and paper and take note of what you see on each screen and what the potato NPCs tell you.
If you do this it goes from one of the worst games in the collection to one of the best. It almost inspired me to create a similarly faux-janky DOS shareware-inspired adventure game.

Cherry Bunny is pretty cool. But it's still like in the bottom two or three when compared the UFO50 games. And that's only because combatants and zoldath are trash.
The implication that the game is better than the typical UFO50 game is ridiculous.
The game doesn't even come close to 99% of the games offered in UFO50.
And the game is playable straight in the browser so everyone can try it and realize how off base you are, if they haven't already played the game.
https://xxylas.itch.io/cherry-bunny-demon-hunter
Cherry Bunny was a flavour of the week/month when the game was brand new. So tons of anons played it.

Itβs one of the most accessible deck builders Iβve ever played and itβs fun because itβs based around greed. Should you invite another guest even though youβve got two troublemakers? Or if thereβs only one slot left but you may invite a popular guest who brings a friend and the party overflows? Send it or end it? And then it gets better when you start playing randomized guest scenarios and it gets tricky figuring out the right balance of earning money to expand your house while making sure you get enough points to get better guests, and not to buy too many so that your star guests needed to show up are almost impossible because you have nearly 40 people on your Rolodex.

Honestly the other anon isnt giving it the credit its due for the actual games themselves, all of them are very functional with quite a bit of depth and stand out individually with pretty much every genre you can think of being covered competently.
The "lore" aspects in the background which the other anon brrought up are more like an ARG and are pretty removed from the games themselves and are something 99% of players won't interact with at all. It's also probably the weakest aspect of the setting which is a companies developement of games over that period of time and I think the reuse of certain enemies and graphics are a much cooler aspect of it than the actual interactable meta narative.

I'm not saying the ARG is bad, it's actually pretty interesting in that you are bouncing between quite a few of the games and looking them over differently compared to when you first played them but the reason why that works is that I accidently stumbled onto it rather than being told about it which kills the discovery which is the only thing it really has going for it as the steps are only passable gameplay wise. This is partially why I recommend the other parts about the narrative to others more than the ARG as there really isn't any other game which nails the growth of a company of this sort in such a complete manner where the games that you do get to play from it are actually fun and hit the experimental vibe of a team getting their feet wet for the first time in a new project, this especially is seen in how even with new genre's in the later years you can tell the controls have become distinctly more polished even though its something brand new from them like the PnC game.

If you don't like the games either you didn't play enough and are ignorant to the very obvious value and quality of the games and the overall collection
>The UFO50 reviews and the discussions on Steam strongly convey that "fan club" idea where people overvalue something that isn't very good because that's what you have to do to stay in the group.

I need to restart it. My main issue with Vainger is its tedious map design with one-way exits. It doesnβt flow well at all and I found myself getting lost multiple times looking for what to do next. Itβs a shame because I like its gimmick inspired by Metal Storm and the mix and match power up qualities.

Itβs fucking cool without being overwhelming because if you shrink on your dog and kill all the fleas heβll start to sniff along the ground and points at places for you to shrink. You can pick him up and place him anywhere to do this, too. Also power ups can be found in multiple locations because of how rooms are seeded (not randomly).

Vainger is great until you want to cherry it, then its bit annoying. If LX systems had select-button, a lot of these problems could have been solved. I still love the songs Vainger has, the game itself is very metroid-coded but the soundtrack has very upbeat vibes that is weird for the genre

I was there for a while, put 140 hours in, but I began to burn out in the 4th and 5th row to a certain extent so I dropped it with the idea I would come back to it eventually. Switch release reminded me to pick up my deck and continue the game. It really is GOTY 2024 imo.

As to my current status with that pic I just posted, I like the core of Valbrace a lot... but it is so grindy. It is hard to motivate myself to play it. SO MANY encounters.
Mini and Max is pretty cool, and I hope it retains my attention.
Reminds me of playing 'Tom and Jerry in Mouse Attacks' on GBC when I was a kid. That game doesn't have SMB2 mechanics or an open world, but for those that want a platforming game as similarly sized small person, I would rec trying it out.
I am saving Night Manor for when I am really in the mood, because I am sure I will love it and don't want to ruin the experience.

Red Candle were made persona non grata after their last game's Winnie the Pooh drama, so mainstream publications and events like TGA refused to touch the game in fear of angering Chinese investors.
Extremely lame and gay, but it is what it is. Nine Sols is a fantstic game and they should be happy that they managed to achieve a smallish but very dedicated fandom. I still see several new pieces of fanart and lore discussions in my social media feeds every day.

most games (90%) are straight-to-the-point fun without any grinding involved
for their first completion, the difficulty on some make it so you need minor grinding in order to get to know the mechanics (if you're good, this is non-existant)
for their full completion some games do require grind

It just has diving down depths instead of a traditional overworld. I think what could have helped the game to be a little more lively are real time hazards you had to time right to swim past that could do damage to you. There's nothing to do but grind, really. And once you reach the final area, that's THE place to grind from level 11 or 12 or so to max (16).

>The implication that the game is better than the typical UFO50 game is ridiculous.
It's better, though. The gameplay is rubbish, but the game offers something that it delivers quite competently. That already puts it above 50% of the games on UFO50. You only mentioned Planet Zoldath and Combatants, but there are a number of games there that don't deliver. That "point and click" mansion game, for example, is, in my opinion, a complete failure of game design because:
>the story is banal, what you read in the first few letters already gives away what's going to happen, no twist, no mystery
>the puzzles aren't interesting
>the investigation isn't interesting
>the gimmick is 100% useless, you have a mini game that adds "technique" to the game, but it's literally a waste of time, you don't even need to win the mini games to get the best ending and win the cherry, it's just a useless interruption in the game to make you waste time
That's a useless game that would be ignored if released on itch.io. Along with Star Waspir (no one would take that seriously as a shoot 'em up), Camouflage (too shallow to work as a puzzle, so much so that the biggest challenges the game offers later on are precision and timing), Block Koala (a bad and uncharismatic version of Sokoban), Golfaria (this game is unbearable), Paint Chase (too shallow even for an arcade game from the early 1980s), The Big Bell Race (only makes sense in multiplayer, and even then you need to find someone else who is desperate for games to play that), etc.

Who the fuck is still running a 2004 computer? How is that even an issue for you? You buy new consoles a hell of a lot more often than every 21 years. What a smokescreen.
For the record, you can boot up a 2004 computer and run a 2004 copy of HL2. Because finding old copies of games is a hell of a lot more doable than buying a new game on Wii in 2025, with their marketplaces shut off.

singleplayer is particularly annoying for most players because of the way rings bounce back to the opponent 80% of the time you hit them. also I always suspected that yogo was far and away the best character in the game in multiplayer, assuming you're good enough with his movement, and I was actually validated just a week ago when the d*scord UFO 50 people did a tournament and grands was a yogo ditto. outrageously degenerate character, outrageously not fun to play against.
my opinion is that the game COULD HAVE been brilliant with some major changes.

on top of that the game is a story about the rise and fall of a game studio as told through a game studio. Games as an art versus a product.

Was playing the games in order up until then. The two that hooked me the most was the Dino civ like and party house, I actually thought most platforms were horrible but the puzzles and strategy type games were great. Still haven't played any game in the lowest row, might come back to it one day.

I swear this is the biggest mistake that a surprising many people appear to make for whatever the reason.
So many people play them in chronological order for whatever the reason, and then drop the game after having grown tired from playing the old games in a row without shaking it up with the modern games of the lower rows. Then missing out completely on the best of what the collection has to offer, which is disproportionately featured on the lower rows.

No, not really.
Despite being a collection of "retro-inspired" games, its more like a collection of mediocre flash games.
There's a few standouts that would've been done better as standalone games with more focus and their own budget, but way too many of them are samey puzzle or strategy games.

>How long are the games?
You pay for production values. That was the whole point in grouping games in the minor league baseball AA or AAA categories. Persona games are 100 hours but they cost the same as hour action game because you pay for production values.
UFO fifty is like an art gallery where an artist or museum has put together a body of works that whilst on their own might vary in quality, Some stand outs and some like block koala, but the greater context of all the games puts together tells a greater story and has a greater thematic depth and its only through seeing all the games as a whole that you can witness that.
If you want to enjoy this as a video game, play it in any order. Mini and max, night house, devilition and a few others are stand outs.
But if you want to enjoy it as art, play the games in chronological order to completion, read the meta data for each of the games and most importantly watch the credits.

The chronology autism is the worst way to play the game.
Start with Barbuta or something. Then play something from the bottom two rows to gain perspective from comparing the old title against the new title. And then whenever you play any of the other games you'll be able to compare them to both the old and modern games of the collection and see how they compare to what was and to what was to come.

>Despite being a collection of "retro-inspired" games
I swear you have got to be the one and the same person who obsesses over the game supposedly being retro. Why do you whine about it in every thread and why is it even a problem to you in the first place?
But worse yet. The games aren't even as retro inspired as you appear to imagine them. They unironically do not shy away from being modern games. So why does that bother you? And why do you complain about it in every thread?

Man now I want a spiritual sequel to Mini and Max where the major plot element is micro and nano plastic waste. The protagonist and their enemies take on plastic qualities such as being able to stretch (platforming/puzzle elements) as well as shapeshift (puzzle elements). But keep finding upgrades while being microscopic size and toughing out tough enemies and hazards.

I got all 50 cherries and then started this game on my chinese knockoff handheld. It works pretty well, but sometimes the small screen is too small (and doing jump-shots can be hard with the small buttons). I've got like ~10 clears/cherries over there too. Its fun to just return to the games I know I loved
