It was the decision to bring the most ambitious new PC game of that time to consoles with an exclusive deal with one of the biggest tech corps on earth. That as the moment we saw for the first time the meddling and downgrading of an former unapologetic vision getting diluted to span the widest net and get even the most normie moron on the vidya train. And sell the fuckigh console, obviously.

I still remember the E3 exclusive showcases of the newly implemented streamlined singleplayer levels which already have all the garbage in it modern console walking sims have. It was an disgusting disgrace compared to the first gameplay videos.

Gamergate is what made the elites specifically focus on killing the culture and turning it into the modern propaganda, subscription service, that we see today. Before gamergate they thought "heh dumb nerds" then after they had to infiltrate every facet of studios to injection culture war BS.

The video game awards were the least gamery thing I've ever seen. The cherry on top was Harrison Ford stumbling our drunk like he is relevant to video games lol.

It's kinda sad that this is what vidya and gaming is to /v/ these days. Feels more like some political activity than actually playing vidya with others and having fun.
When I think back to my childhood, I don't hold any kind of topics about politics or yelling slurs as some highlight. Just kinda embarrassing that I found it cool as a kid to be able to say naughty adult words anonymously online.

Gaming was already starting the die when Sony entered the console race. That caused a paradigm shift that led to Microsoft entering and fucking things up. The future of gaming was set to be Nintendo + PC. Sony and Microsoft delayed this timeline, but now everything seems to be getting back on track to returning to just Nintendo + PC.

If it weren't for Sony and Microsoft SEGA probably wouldn't been pushed out of the console race, and Nintendo wouldn't be so cheeky nowadays because they would have an actual rival that caters to gamers with a similar taste, and SEGA would be making more vidya than they do now.

Sega was always fucked, honestly. They blew too much of their money on useless accessories and released consoles too soon. Sega do what Nintendon't really meant jumping when you shouldn't jump at all. It was only a matter of time before they went third party. I'm more impressed that Sony and Microsoft lasted this long but they were always on borrowed time. Nintendo and Valve played it smart. They always play the long game and let their enemies eat themselves.

I felt like SEGA was finally doing something right with the Dreamcast, it just came out at a very bad time with the PS2 and Xbox, and people being weary after the Saturn disaster. Dreamcast still has some of my favorite games of the gen, the Sonic Adventure games were just kino. I grew up with a GameCube, but the Adventure games were my favorite games to play on there.
