Pulling a trigger at an "enemy" is a very cheap way of having fun. Call of Duty (and XIV, and almost anything else with very stale and repetitive content that is easily made) is built around it, they throw hundreds of enemies at you in single player and in multiplayer the maps are tiny, the respawns are quick, and the killing is quick.

Actually using your brain while having fun is much better, and doesn't desensitise you. Things like Thief will always be better than Assassin's Creed, because no matter how many bing bing wahoo systems are added, you aren't involved in the world.
