RPG Maker
Anyone else making something in this?
Or playing something made with it?
Let's get the preliminaries out of the way
>buh-buh-buht why not use da unity/unreal/godot/gamemaker/yourmom engine
I don't know, just for the fun of it.
Alright now that that's done...
I've been cobbling a little yume nikki / LSD dream emulator-like walking sim in 2003 version (using the actual yume nikki project as base) and it's a lot of fun.
Sometimes it can be a bitch if you want to do something specific but I usually cut my losses and scrap the idea or go with something simpler instead of trying to figure out how to do it, which is kind of freeing in a way.
Have there been any cool new projects made recently that flew under the radar, anons? I haven't been keeping up....
why would you make or play an RPG maker game without any fight...

Hmm, I dunno.
Yume Nikki and The Witch's House and Ib and a lot of others are really popular RPG Maker games without any "fight" in them.
In fact, all the most popular games made with it don't.
So there's gotta be something to it, you know.

I did mess around with the maniacs patch for 2003 for a bit, it's cool but seems like all the functionality it adds is a bit too much for me to understand.
So I'm just stuck to vanilla, just tinkering with the yume nikki base game and changing stuff in it.

I got my copy of VX Ace recently and Iβm thinking that if Iβm going to use it to make something, it would be related to that βspiritual successor to Homestuckβ project I was planning.
I love making little projects with RPG Maker to amuse myself. The older, more limited ones (like 2003) are my favorites because messing with the eventing to twist up the engine is the fun part. But for me, itβs RPG Maker 2 and 3 on the PS2.

Never tried the consoles ones.
Are they different from their pc counterparts?
I kinda like the simplicity of 2003, same reason I like the older versions of gamemaker before studio 2 when they made it all modern looking.
Not sure what you mean by twist up the engine to mess with eventing though.
It's all pretty straightforward point and click from a list of options in 03.

The Coffin of Andy and Leyley was another one from not too long ago.
Both had kind of a flavor of the month spot in the limelight on this board with people spamming threads for a bit before both vanished and got forgotten.

As for under the radar stuff then there was Clinical Trial.

Don't think there were threads for it but if there were and I missed them they were few and far between.

Good call, anon. Clinical Trial really nails that oppressive dream-logic atmosphere, and the art feels like it crawled out of a sketchbook scrawled on during a breakdown. Itβs got that classic "unpolished on the surface but deeply intentional underneath" RPG Maker vibe that makes it feel personal in a weird way. Let us know what you think after a playthrough-curious if others picked up on the subtle storyline stuff with the pills.

I never finish anything in RPG Maker
>want to make rpg with just the default assets
>run out of ideas after making like an hour of gameplay
>want to make a lego rpg with a class system, crafting and use background images for that prerendered background feel
>got all my classes, equipment, and even manage to get a simple crafting script working, but find no way to do the background thing
>want to make a megaman x rpg with stop motion using my figures and using gundam figures as the antagonists
>find that i really can't set up the battle animations to be how i want them, got no idea what script i'd need and i can't even handle anything more than the most basic scripts
>want to make a somewhat open world yu-gi-oh rpg where you have a monster party made up of summoned cards obtained from shops or as drops, spells are consumables/equipment, traps are additional skills, monsters can be fused to make better ones, etc.
>have no idea how many party members you can have before the engine shits itself, and scrolling through 500+ monsters in your party or to select for selling would be aids, and once again i'd likely be too retarded to use whatever script could help
I hate RPG Maker man, hundreds of hours wasted with no pay-off. Only damn thing I ever finished was a crappy 2003 game based on a poorly balanced tabletop RPG I made in high school.

Hiring a code monkey to do a system like that for you in unity would cost you 100x that.
And asking an AI to do it would take a long time.
So if it just works and you want to make a game fast it's not a bad option.

RPG maker is shit, the only thing notable that comes out of it is gooner games.
I played with it a bit back when I was 10 but if you are at all serious about games you should learn something else they are not that hard. The systems are too generic even by jrpg standards and the stock assets are a crutch that will spoil any game you make with them since everyone has seen them a billion times.

It's not the first time I've heard that take, but I don't really get it either. There's only three hard confirmed yuri couples, there's next to nothing for PDAs from either, and while they're both utilized for plot purposes neither has more overall relevance than the fourth confirmed (straight) couple. Lots of general teasing/flirting from characters like Melissa too I guess.
It is technically a light yuri game, but I don't know how there's enough for yurifags to latch onto or non-yurifags to be put off by. I like it for the boss fights (especially route final bosses, most are quite unique), story, and silly character interactions and sidequests.

it's hard to describe the experience if you enjoy that part, you just wouldn't get it i guess, it's like trying to explain to someone who likes the taste of durian why you don't like it
