you don't get it
if it takes more time IRL for your character on the screen to travel from the exit of the place they were at to the place they're going, that means the game is better.

In the future, games will consist of maps of infinitely large featureless voids between each object in the game, which will be optimal game design.

There are multiple areas you can go in that Cosmo Canyon screen which are not drawn in. There are also indoor areas, secrets, a dungeon, and a bonus forest puzzle area 5 seconds away.

My favorite are dense open world, so you dont get a lot of random side stuff byt what is there is meaningful. Imagine how better Elden Ring would be if there were no Catacombs, only major areas with a smaller open world

Try Sly 2 if you haven't played it yet. That's the best version of the GTA formula. The levels are large and open like GTA maps, with the same type of missions scattered across. Unlike GTA they're small enough to be filled with cool details that are all meant to be used at some point.

Basically you get the Oblivion sewer exit moment eight different times before the game is done.

this map (the real map) is the greatest duality
these scenic vistas you can never access that let your mind wander, in addition to a fucking terrible actual map that every player fucking hates universally because it's a colossal straight line where 90% of it has no gameplay purpose and it has the most tedious progression possible (climbing ledges repeatedly) or even in the rework just a very long walk through areas where real enemies will never be
what were they THINKING
it's no wonder they just cut the entire map in the later games, but the whole map would've been fine with world and rise's gay slingshot spiderman shit but they didn't even bring the whole map back for those either

both good!
left is more of a carnival ride where the path is set for you but its still fun because you'll get to enjoy a cool view or art or interaction
and right is more of a "make your own fun" where you can just roam anywhere and enjoy it however you please!
neither are bad but both could fall into pitfalls if they're done poorly!
(aka nothing to do nor to see)

That's one of the weirdly good things about Death Stranding where an open-world while not necessarily done perfectly, is done better than a lot of others.
You aren't just exploring the world for important shit, then fucking off back to base.
You're reconnecting a world and making it traversible for all the fictional people (and also other players).
To a certain degree, the world matters, rather than just the stuff in the world itself.
