Which game was like this for you?

Skate (the original one). The flick-it system really sounded stupid to me at first, and the first teasers looked like it was going to be "radical, xtreme" shit, like wal-mart skateboard-inspired bedsheets.

Jak X

The series felt like it ended so perfectly on Jak 3 and the idea of a racing game sounded kind of stupid. Ended up being one of my favorite racing games of all time. The OST and story are way underrated too

I thought clair obscure was going to flop when i watched them show off generic run around overworld collectables gameplay and random party conversations/cutscenes.

I was VERY wrong and i openly admit that.

I wouldn't really consider Nioh to be a proper souls-like to begin with. It feels more like an action game with souls-like elements. The design philosophy is entirely different.

Splatoon.
Then 2 and 3 had me like bottom pic for announcement and release. I thought it looked stupid at first, but I absolutely love Splatoon now.

FF Stranger of Paradise. I was a huge fan of Nioh before it but the idea off FF, Nomura, and Team Ninja fused together was just bizarre at first. The very first trailer wasn't very good and I don't latch onto games because of memes either. But after that first harsh response, the trailers they showed started to look better and better and then eventually I came around to the unusual crossover. Now it's probably one of my favorite modern TN action RPGs and I defend it whenever I can because it was one of the rare cases where my first impression was terribly wrong. I'm still hoping for a SoP2 as well but it's unlikely that it'll happen.

Elden ring
I wasn't going to get it on launch but they straight up made EAC compatible with Linux just for the steam deck launch and I was pleasantly surprised. Also helped that I had a new 4k TV to play it on.

Not a single game released in the last 15 years
I don't remember what series of releases it was that completely ruined my expectations for any future games
