Started playing Nioh. It's really hard but so addicting, it might even be better than Ninja Gaiden.

yep it rules. with it becoming conventional wisdom that ninja gaiden is awesome, i wonder how long it will take for people to realize that the same team went on to create several games that are faster, more complex and infinitely more satisfying, combining ninja gaiden gameplay with souls DNA and diablo loot, abilities and buildcraft....

I've played some 90 hours of it during the last month. I understand why it hooks people up, and I stopped just when the +11 equipment started to drop.
My main gripes is that exploration usually goes unrewarded except for stuff like Locks (those items that increase skill points), because literally everything else drops much faster from fights. Also, some enemies have no business being in this game, being way overtuned like the Namahage or the Kusarigama Yoki dude. The Namahage never stops fucking attacking and the Kusarigama Yoki attacks too fast and does way too many damage (also creates those yokai realm puddles to annoy you). Someone mentioned in a prior thread breaking their horns to make them easier, but what if you can't kill them in a single combo after that? Because the dude was doin 16,000 damage per attack, so of course he was dancing around 5 enemies.
You didn't reach that part yet, but just know some side missions have duo boss fights, and they are pure cancer. The devs took this criticism to heart and there is only one duo boss fight in the entirety of Nioh 2. I mean 2v1.
Anyway, I just stopped short of 91 hours. I didn't see any more reason to repeat the missions for hours just to get a +12 instead of a +11.

Exploration actually rewards you with nearly complete sets which is handy when you're just going through the game. But the main point of the level design is to make sure you can "soften" hard encounters up, for example by removing an annoying archer or ambushing foe before the encounter even begins, and in this aspect the exploration is god tier.

>archers
Man, don't tell me. I just remembered another low point. This only shows up in higher difficulties, but Tecmo had this retarded design decision in NG3 of having a motherfucker with a rocket launcher spamming rockets from outside the arena, so you can never stay in one place for too long. In Nioh, the same thing happens, but it's archers and cannoneers. However, it only becomes a chore in later difficulties, because they fire much faster there. A cannoneer is downright deadly firing a projectile every second. All that while you're fighting 3 dudes in the middle of a yokai realm puddle.

By that point you typically have a magatama, so you can ping pong it all back.

There's no point looking for secrets when the only reward that the game's loot system can give you is another roll at the same randomly generated items that you would get anyway by just progressing forwards
Fully random loot in an endless vertical number ladder is soulless

Actual secrets either give you permanent stat boosts, or allow you to circle around a hard encounter and make it significantly easier. Loot may as well not be a thing in those situations, it's far important to prevent another gaki suddenly falling on your ass mid fight and evolving into giga gaki immediately.

Don't try to do every side mission as soon as it appears. There are missions of enemy waves and some fights against two bosses. Don't trust the level recommendations and not even the red grave indicators. One of the hardest fights in the original game was in a mission where you had to fight those umbrellas together with other yokai, and the recommendation was only 10 levels above the final mission.
A useful tip: if you see those red graves being revived automatically, it means there is a Bokuboku nearby. It looks like a monk playing a guitar (shamisen). Kill him so he stops reviving them.
