You might be right. The player was often... corraled into playing the re4 setpiece the way they were design(however good that design mightve been). One of the better one, The Cabin, while it might be the best actiony House on Haunted Hill experience in vidya, theres not a whole lot of player freedom. Youre just there for the defensive battle, however real neato it might be, and then to move onto the next area. The ofc there the literal railroaded segment, also tons of fun.
A more ambiguous example would be the chainsaw sisters. You get a bit of time to explore before hand and pick up what the devs are putting down. Theres a lot more freedom in this area to move around and approsch it how you want. If you just guide them through the extremely obvious and well lit corridor with all the explosive lanterns and barrels you can get through the encounter with a fraction of the ammo(making the cabin fight that much easier).
The setpieces in TEW were a lot more arena based. They give you a lot of options to hang out and kill some guys ez, then dip out to an adjacent scetion via one of the many options, and then refocus on the new kill zones and the baddies come back at you. Its fun, and kinda falls more in line with RE8, like I said. I guessing it would be more like RE8 is the bridge between TEW and RE4.
RE4 felt more like surviving, and TEW felt more like... dominating. Like, RE4 is trying to maks the best of the presented situations, and TEW is trying to overcome the presented situations in the best possible way.
Im not sure if I prefer the cinematic nature of re4 style setpieces, or just the quality of them for their purpose. I will say TEW moggs the shit out of Gears of War though.
