Path of Exile 1/2 and the death of the campaign
I love PoE1 and like 2 but I've noticed that it has caused a pretty shitty trend in the ARPG market:
The death of the campaign.

Basically everyone now views ARPG campaigns as boring slogs where all that matters is how short it is. PoE 1/2 players would, genuinely, prefer if the campaign were nothing but a series of tiny straight lines that lead to a small arena with monsters and then repeat that until it ends. They find any mechanics, story, bosses with phases, or areas larger than a small circle to be annoying and tedious. All of the work put into it is viewed as pointless and everything should be put into making more maps. I get it. PoE is a live service game. I have like 4k hours in it. I won't pretend that I love the campaign that much anymore, but the problem is that it has lead to this same attitude effecting EVERY OTHER ARPG.

Good examples are things Diablo IV, Last Epoch, and Titan Quest 2.
DIV lets you skip the campaign entirely. This leads to getting to the "end game" instantly where you sit in hell tides until you leech enough XP to go to the next world tier to repeat this.
Last Epoch has a barebones campaign that the devs have admitted is not a focus, and on a second character you can skip, genuinely, like 60-70% of it
Titan Quest 2 is new and in early access. People are already asking about the end game and saying they hope the campaign isn't long.

Meanwhile Titan Quest 1 was all about the campaign. It was long and kinda slow, but had cool set pieces, bosses, locations, and ideas. Diablo 2 was literally built around the campaign. Grim Dawn is the same. Just feels like there should be room for ARPGs that you play for the campaign/story and maybe have some optional content at the end vs EVERY ARPG now being a live service loot piΓ±ata game.

ARPGs were always low IQ slop, play spellforce instead.

But PoE1 got a new expansion and they're going to release new content for it which is directly impacting PoE2.

POE1 campaign was actually pretty decent... until the halway mark where it expects you to go through all the same levels again. if they didnt do that I'd have loved to replay the game and try more builds, but knowing that half assed repetitive shit awaits kills any interest for me.

Campaigns are archaic at this point for this genre. Just like the repeated Difficulties and "Act" structure.
The best game would be PoE 1 Maps, but with Narrative and gated progression added in.
Just mix the campaign and the endgame together, winning formula.

That is a possible idea, but I feel like not every ARPG needs an end game. Right now it feels like every ARPG has to have a campaign that caps out at like 8-10 hours (on a first playthrough) otherwise people get upset and think it is too long. I'd rather a game like PoE1/2 have a shorter campaign but then Titan Quest 2 have a 30-40 hour campaign that you might play like twice and have gotten your money's worth and not needed an end game mapping system.
I was just listening to a popular PoE1/2 racer talking about PoE2 's campaign and he was complaining that even with twink gear it took him 6 hours to beat it, and I was just thinking to myself "Man, imagine if I was a kid and I played D2's campaign and it took me only 6 hours to beat it"

>poe1's endgame is so much fun that it's warping the entire rest of the genre
I mean I guess this is sort of a problem but only because other games aren't also reaching the heights of poe1's endgame

Anon, the issue is that ARPGs do not have to be about a live service treadmill. It is fine for PoE1/2. It is not fine for Titan Quest or Grim Dawn or other ARPGs. Not only can they not compete, but it is just limiting the market to one type of ARPG. People telling the TQ2 devs to add end game to an EA product with like 1 act and 4 classes are fucking insane.

I agree, I haven't gotten the game yet because of that, and I like TQ1.

PoE's story, or at least the worldbuilding around it is cool as fuck, Wraeclast is unironically a top 10 fantasy setting

I dont care, I still just play Diablo 2 (offline with QoL mods)

Wraeclast is very cool but it also is a clusterfuck now thanks to all of the different league mechanics. I am not a fan of some of the lore implications.

However, it is nice to have an actual dark fantasy setting that hasn't pussied out. It still has slavery, death, sex, succubi with tits out, booby armor, etc. It is realistic and grounded, but yeah. It feels old school.
