Finished it recently. I don´t know the original (or rather, I played maybe half of it also recently). I had good times with it, the combat system is great imho. The story was confusing though and it didn´t engage me very much. The characters were ok, but often too goofy and I couldn´t take it seriously - or - it simply didn´t work on me, although its not the goofiness per se that bothers me. I also wasn´t quite sure of the motivation of the advanture - the goal of the party was very vague (just go roughly after Sephiroth?).

It also dragged a bit by the end- I had over 100 hours - but to be fair, all games drags for me after that much hours

Yeah it follows this sort of mid section of the original game that generally puts the attention on main team and their backstories, while the overall aim is following Sephiroth around. It will ultimately become relevant, but unfortunately with them cutting the story up in chunks it's not something that comes to any sort of resolution until the last game.

FF7R is a nightmare of an experience, the first area is fun because of its novelty but each new area ends up being a chore because they're more and more awful to navigate.
The story didn't need all the alternate reality stuff with Zack or the whispers, it baffles that this is how they chose to expand the original story.
I also could go on and on about the battle system, like adding trillions of mechanics does not make a good or fun gameplay.
I honestly fail to see how anyone could have fun with this game, the card mini-game was cool I guess? and the parade too. Everything else goes to the garbage can where it belongs.

It's because nowadays, there's an expectation that enemies have to sort of "make sense" for where they are. Back in the old days, it didn't matter. Monsters could look like whatever you fucking wanted. Mutant angler fish could be found in the middle of a wasteland. Random ass mutant squid alligators could be found in a tropical rainforest. They didn't give a fuck, creature design was random as fuck and whatever the artist thought looked cool at the time.

But now? Everything has to "fit". Take the Hell House for instance. In the original FF7, it was just a random encounter. I love the combat and music of Remake and Rebirth. It's seriously among the best ever done in gaming. The trade off is a story that is extremely bloated, confusing and obfuscating to the point that it smothers the character and emotionally driven story of the original to death. And it squanders the chance to recreate iconic moments in a cinematic medium (something that the og FF7 was largely sold on back on release) that would shock old and new players alike in favor of "rule of cool" anime complexity.

Case in point: Aerith's death being buried in time jannies, alternate universes, not actually showing her get stabbed (muh age rating), Cloud thinking Aerith is actually alive and she probably is in an alternate dimension somehow (way to ruin the sense of loss SE I hate you), fighting Sephiroth (with Zack! who could also Cloud remembers already somehow!!), a god version of Sephiroth, then Sephiroth AGAIN but with Aerith this time who just died btw so the impact of her dying is immediately negated.

By the ending of this exhausting boss rush you're not fucking sad, you're just tired and confused. Wtf happened? She died in one universe but lived in another? Or she died period and Cloud is just being Xtra crazy? Aerith's death should be a definitive climax with absolute finality that makes you a fucking wreck full of rage and despair like Cloud was. She's gone. She will no longer talk, no longer laugh, cry, or get angry. The core theme of FF7 has been hijacked by aged devs who substitute obfuscation for complexity and complexity for coolness and coolness for quality.

Go play the originals, originals watch AC cause it's in there too. The fact they didn't show the infamous scene is most likely a setup for something in the last part, or they wanted to leave one of the best scenes alone instead of trying to recreate it. Either way, it works. The ending has to be that big and will be explained in the final game. You can whine about it but the rest of the story they have to cover leaves plenty of room to wrap up loose ends and explains tons about Sephirtoh. (Spoilers, it's AC Sephiroth pulling the strings, which is just Jenova really, so its the same fucking story at its core.)

I wonder if anyone gets really into final fantasy as a whole franchise as an adult. In the West it seems like you either happened to stumble on them on the Ps2 or you miss the boat completely and are later kind of surprised to discover how huge it is. I can't see someone sitting down with the original ff7 in their 20s now and becoming the kind of mega-fan the rebirth games are aimed at.

Its a shame. I feel like I could have been a final fantasy guy but I was on like, Ratchet and Clank, Simpsons Hit and Run and Ty the Tasmanian tiger at the time. I was really bad at games and no doubt wouldn't have finished it, not even close, but it could still have planted the seed. I just didn't stumble on it.

It's been a gradual process. Sephiroth is much more proactive regarding Cloud this time around, and this clearly had an effect on Cloud's mental state.

In Remake, an image of Sephiroth appears and converses with Cloud after the reactor mission. This is the beginning of Sephiroth's increased influence. In the Gongaga reactor, due to a combination of his increased stress as well as mako poisoning, it gives Sephiroth an opening to actually take over. The problem is, due to the mistaken assumption that this is all due to cellular degradation, no one is able to actually do anything for him. His mental barriers are getting torn down to a far worse extent than they ever were in AG, but everyone believes that Cloud's problems are purely physical, that it's his body breaking down rather than his spirit. You can mend the spirit with camaraderie, but you can only mend the body with medicine, and no one knows how to fix that. They treat the situation too delicately so clearly, nothing anyone does really helps Cloud at all. Then there's Rosche. Rosche succumbs to degradation and becomes one of the robed guys. This only further convinces Cloud that he's becoming another one of them. By this point, he believes it's an inevitability.

There are other effects too. Cloud's interactions with the Whispers is likely what caused Barret to decide not to bring him along to the next mission in Remake. When Cloud mentioned the "invisible enemies", Barret probably thought he was insane and thought him to be a liability. That's why he chose to cut Cloud off. Because in Remake and Rebirth, there's one other secondary trend: Cloud's increased reliance on Aerith. This is obviously a double-edged sword since it means that his co-dependency towards Aerith is much higher in Rebirth than it was in OG. It's not a jrpg problem, it effects everything. The cinemasins culture of listing "everything wrong with..." has killed everyone's confidence to make something with fun in mind first. I agree it's millenials primarily to blame, but it's something everyone became guilty of. At some people people decided it was more fun to figure out why by back to the future doesn't make sense instead of just enjoying the fucking movie. Now writers and directors have to make stuff with these people in mind.
