It's like somebody took one game, dissected it into several parts, and then decided to sell the separate parts as individual games over the course of 5 years. If you were to combine them all into a single hypothetical game, you'd get a pretty good one actually.

That's kind of what happened, the development for FFXIII was a clownshow, the artists wouns up creating way more assets than could fit on a blu-ray disk because the teams didn't communicate with each other. So the extra content got put into sequels

It being their first HD mainline was the big issue. They were so ambitious that they had plans to make it an expanded universe. In the end Versus 13 was uncoupled from Fabula Nova Crystallis and it ended on a wet fart that never released (Final Fantasy Agito).

No, you don't. You're thinking of some other game. XIII-2 is more lax than supermajority of games concerning this, since you can replay most of the scenes by closing gates.

XIII was a complete game. Sequels weren't in the mind of developers during production.
However Square wasn't going to waste half a decade of assets on one single game especially when FFXIII wasn't console defining as FF7 and FFX were.

It's not like that at all though? XIII-2 has a radically different approach to story progression(and the story itself really), and LR was a different type of game.

13-2 is literally just all the stuff they ran out of time to fit into the previous game + an idea for a new chrono game they retooled into addressing all the complaints people had about the first game (hyper linear hallway broken up by cutscenes, the combat being fun but taking too long to fill out, constantly shifting the party around) and then 13-3 is just them giving up and making lightning the protagonist against with a bootleg valkyrie script tri-ace had kicking around.

If you go a little bit more back in time you will realize that ff12 killed FF, and then FFX killed FF, FF9 killed FF, FF8 killed FF etc etc etc. now it‘s ff16, before that it was ff15.

It‘s the same as pokemon, the newest game is always bad, the older ones start to be better and in the end, the one you played as a kid was always the best.
