The actual games themselves, the rules, controls, internal logic, etc, what makes the game a game, have for most genres either been perfected or reached a point where the main flavors are already pretty clearly defined.
Graphics has reached a point of minimal gain every year as opposed to continual obvious improvement.
But companies think graphics is the be all end all of games, and so every AAA release has to fixate on that.
With the actual game part of most games being already solved, the graphics is what makes them stand out. Most games now do not stand out or have a defined stylel. They play it "safe" with the most generic and inoffensive looks possible,or try to pander to the woke side.
Who would play a new game that isn't really much better gameplay wise over many older ones, often worse due to DLC/Microtransaction fuckery, as well as demanding graphics engine, over a reliable and known game that is established and works on most hardware?
