The main problem with FemShep is that Shepard is an inherently masculine character. Commanding a ship, going into battle, leading from the front and so on are extremely masculine things to do, so while they're perfectly in line with regular Shepard, FemShep is entirely out of step. A woman in Shepard's position would probably do a lot more investigating, persuading, consensus-building and so on.

FemShep comes off like every female sergeant I've ever met - trying too hard to fit a masculine role and being intensely cringe (and not respected) as a result.

It did almost nothing. The Greek interior was invaded and burned while the city states were still getting their shit together. Strategically it was of no value. The defensive plan Themistocles drew up was never going to work, but it's all that they had.

What makes the 300 heroic is that they knew all of this. They knew that there was absolutely no chance any of them would survive the battle, and that they would never be able to inflict enough damage on an army so vast that it would matter. But it was their duty to march to Thermopylae, so they did.
