The deck can play and emulate games like gamecube but its not the best handheld.

It's underpowered even for switch games, has no VRR and to get even a decent screen you have to be a deck OLED used since the deck LCD is garbage even compared to a rog ally. You could build a PC using old parts for half the price and get 2x the performance. I slapped an old 1060 card I got for $100 into an old PC build and it already outpaces the deck. I'm pretty sure the AMD chink mini PCs are also cheaper when on sale too. The only use case for the Deck is handheld gaming, but unless you travel a lot it's not really a plus.

It’s just an immutable (i.e. fuckwit proof) arch install with steam pre-installed and set to automatically launch. It’s not particularly special. Not aware of any DRM it has given it’s just a Linux install, you can plug in a keyboard and which to a tty, and log in as root and do whatever the fuck you want. The only telemetry would be while Steam is running, which isn’t specific to the Deck anyway (and you can turn it off)

Bazzite is a community supported option since Valve doesn’t really offer support for running SteamOS on anything other than the deck. There’s a bunch of them now, EndeavourOS, Garuda, or you can just install Arch.

In my opinion the main benefit to the steam deck is user experience. The trackpads alone differentiate it, because it allows a lot more PC games to be played on the go, which would otherwise suck ass to play. The ROG Ally was a rushed response that marketed itself by having a more powerful chip and better screen, and that’s it. It’s been successful largely because bigger numbers, and that it’s also way easier to buy.

It's pretty comfortable and runs most of the games. For example I struggled playing FF7R and P5R on PS4pro but I managed to finish those thanks to the portability. Mods are really easy to configure too.
I also play tons of point and click and first person games so the trackpads are fucking perfect for me (it's the reason why others umpcs don't interest me, even if snoy makes the supposed ps6 portable I bet it won't have trackpads). Steam Deck has a thriving community with plenty of supports, mods and tools.
These applies to the non-X variant of the Rog Ally though. Obviously the X would be better on the SD on paper, but at that price point you can easily get a proper gaming laptop.
