I like inviting friends over to play Nintendo 64 for the first time and seeing them get confused about how the controller works

I remember being very anxious about that control stick the first time I played Mario Kart myself.
3D wasn't a shock for me at all for some reason, but that control stick...I might've played Microsoft's Motocross Madness on PC by that point, but I'm not sure. Otherwise really only 2D NES and SNES games.

Say what you will about this console sucking but I always get a kick out of people virtually never playing any of its games before coming over to my house and getting engrossed in them for hours. This is the ultimate household console for people getting together to play video games.

Literally no one had this issue back in the day. Quit listening to YouTuber bullshit artists that say stupid shit for clicks. My 3 year old sister knew how to play this console back in the day. If the N64 controller confuses you, you are a legit retard.

The N64 experience is confusing and offputting and unpleasant. Good job OP.

A legend, a classic, an icon. Top tier job by whoever designed it.

If you're not making them get blisters on their palms playing Mario Party, you're not doing it right.

>hey what if we make it so you have to move your whole damn hand if you want to switch between the dpad and joystick?
it was just a strange and bad idea

It was outside expectations that some games would use both the stick and the pad. The pad was for 2D and the stick or 3D, or choosing for preference one or the other.
It kind of went unrealized because there were nearly zero 2D games and menu heavy games.

Plenty of games use the d-pad for management options like changing items/weapons, maps, toggling states, etc. That you don't know this shows how little you've played. And yes, it is always annoying to use the d-pad for these controls.

I prefer this over a misaligned DPad that you get with modern controllers that include both.
You can't tell me playing a 2D game is comfortable when the DPad is lower than the stick.

Thankfully not a problem on PlayStation controllers.

I'm aware of that- the controller was designed first.
