eh, I liked it but dishonored is still the best thing they've put out. this game has some surprisingly good level design, the space station feels like a metroidvania styled world, with backtracking and using certain tools to open new routes. the combat is lame, though, and there's only a small amount of enemies. I did like that each one has their own unique gimmick and you have to do specific things to deal with them, so if you get multiple enemies on you at once you can get overwhelmed if you don't handle them appropriately, but the problem is that the game just never gets to that point, and it seems like it's better to avoid combat in its entirely.

it's a solid game but there will never be a sequel so what else can be said?

True, but was there any competition to being System Shock 3?
There was that one render of sheboon shodan threatening the cracker but it didn't go anywhere. It was announced in 2015 and we've had no news since 2020.

I think future system shock like games should build ontop of the ambition that Prey developed. It genuinely move System Shock like games forward after Bioshock moved it back with it's dumbing down of the gameplay mechanics

Prey (2017) really was the spiritual successor we didn't know we needed. It's like Arkane took one look at what Bioshock did and said "no, we're going back to thinking man's immersive sims." The Neuromod system is basically the new cyber modules, the Typhon powers are your psionics, and Talos I is basically Citadel Station but wrapped in a sleek ultramodern shell. All it’s missing is SHODAN calling you an insect every 10 minutes. Only downside is the combat never *feels* great to play, more like a means to an end - but honestly, that's true of most immersive sims.

Still, when the game lets you break every rule with clever use of GLOO Gun platforming and stacking crates like a lunatic, that’s peak System Shock energy.

I enjoyeed it, but it goes too far afield to be a "successor" to system shock. The lack of any real cyberpunk elements is a no-go factor alone right there.
Prey 17 has more in common with Alien and Bioshock, honestly.

I'm replaying the game and I don't even remember what order I went with regarding the neuromods. Do you guys have a thing you usually max out first? I didn't go full wrench my first playthrough (focused on firearms) and I'm thinking of doing that this time. Is the wrench useful against the bigger enemies on Nightmare?

I just rushed maxed out repair since there's so many things that need spare parts. I also like fucking around with the turrets. Game's fucking rad though, feels nice to play it again.

everything is usable, and only the nightmares are a little bit difficult with certain builds, but killing certain enemies with the wrench can be a little tedious and you'll have to lean on stealth a ton if you don't want to cheese with other powers or combat focus, pulling out the gloo constantly gets pretty annoying

combat focus is busted, mimic can be kind of fun if you've never taken it, lots of ways to sneak into places early as a coffee mug

But you are alone for pretty much the entire game, excepting the fight in the cargo bay where the surviving security officers are there. But I always stack as many turrets as will physically fit in that space as I can so all the typhon get gibbed before the officers even have a chance to think about getting a shot off.

Yeah, but you rarely if ever have a reason to go to your office beyond the first few story missions that require it, so they're more or less just voices on your radio for the vast majority of the game. Hell once the nightmare starts appearing that actually actively incentivizes you to avoid anyone still alive if you're trying to save as many people as you can, because they can easily get caught in the crossfire.

You're pretty much alone for most of the game. Plus despite Prey being a shock like, it's still doing it's own thing. It added a handful of NPCs that barely 10 percent of the game as it's own spin on the typical shock formula. Plus it fits with the over arching story of the game and ties in with the twist at the end. The game is testing on how much of a psychopath you are by adding human NPCs. Prey is a shock like but it's also it's own game that doesn't shameless rip off System Shock beat for beat. It tries something new and fresh with the subgenre while still retaining it's roots

An excellent game with an even better DLC. Roguelite elements is really the next step in immersive sims. >Randomization = unpredictability = improvisation = deeper engagement with mechanics
>No saves + progress reset = no savescumming = more experimentation
One big disadvantage with roguelite elements though is that it limits the kinds of stories you can tell (time loops, virtual realities, etc.) so the narrative can suffer. I think the future of the genre is continuing down the same path but trying to make a compelling story despite this limitation.
