Is Resident Evil 4 scary? I'm really bad with horror, I hate being scared or startled, but I've been enjoying Mikamis other games and people say Resident Evil 4 is amazing and one of his best

First couple hours or so are trying to be scary, then game gives up and it's just 100% action movie

It has some gotcha moments but is 99% action and stealing random shit to buy more guns.

It starts as a serious game but quickly turns into a wacky action game. There are some spooky sections though especially in the last act.

The game's not partticularly scary as a whole, but it has moments where it can be surprisingly spooky. To name a few, the novistador sewers scared the pants off me as a teenager, the regeneradors are notoriously scary for their sound design and the music that plays when they're around, and the segment where you play as Ashley is straight up horror, and is probably the scariest part of the game.
But everything I've mentioned makes up less than 5% of the whole game, and the vast majority of it is just shooting ganados in various locations.

The original gamecube version was because it was actually challenging which made you on edge in every single encounter.

All the ports/remakes/remasters had the difficulty toned down and altered, and it makes it far easier.

not really, it's tense but overall its 95% action and 5% horror, hell I'd say even F.E.A.R was scarier

It's tense and exciting, but for the most part it's not really that scary - especially compared to some more disturbing games, such as Silent Hill or Fatal Frame.

But if you have already beaten the original RE-trilogy + the couple spinoffs before RE4, you should do just fine. It's just the "next step" in evolution really.

That being said, RE4 is a great game, one of the best, but it greatly benefits from having played the classic RE trio first.

the enemies and art direction would be 100% scarier if the story and the gameplay weren't super cringy ร over the top action movie shit. part of me wishes I got a true survival horror game in the exact same setting, but then I wouldnt have gotten the same re4 I love so much

it's a good game but not because it's scary. in fact it's more of an action game, and if you want to be a boomer about it, it's the game that killed the franchise and ushered in a new era of action oriented wacky nonsense that has nothing to do with survival horror. this is true but the original games weren't scary either and this shift in gameplay was actually fun (at least in 4 and 5, 6 was a miss).

this franchise is similar to sonic in that it's been going through something of an identity crisis. I think the people at capcom take it very seriously when people laugh at their shitty writing and try really hard to offer a fun game experience, which is why I can't totally hate them despite their many missteps.

All classic Resident Evils are more action than horror.

How so?

on paper it sounds scary af. Being lost in a foreign country in some backwoods with maniac villiagersm, castles etc. but like all resident evil games (maybe not 1) your a get fed up with weapons and ammo on masse which kills the survival aspect completely
