I like City Folk more than Wild World purely because it brings back real world holidays which Wild World lacked for some reason.

Wild World lacked them because the GCN game had two different holiday sets for Japan and America and at the time, they didn’t wanna do that for Wild World so they decided to make a uniform set of “unique” holidays for every region. After that they sorta stopped caring though.

Only bad part of City Folk was grass deteriorating.

Is there any reason to play older games or should I just start with New Horizons?

New leaf was the peak of the series, it retains the soul of the older games but has a lot of modern convenience and customization.
City folk comes after if you must go old school.
New Horizons would literally be my last pick.

I know this is true but I've tried even playing City Folk modded on Wii U with controller-friendly controls and it still doesn't quite... idk what it is. But it never really hit me like it should.
Wild World just has so much charm somehow even though I know it's the slimmest game with really repetitive holidays. It easily has my favorite graphics in the franchise with that PS1-era 3D look, and I like the sound bytes of the animalese in it, and I just like how everything feels so small and-- EUWH!
I definitely think the GC game and Wild World are the best. Honestly I'd play New Horizons over New Leaf today. NL was great content-wise but it really is the same as New Horizons in how charmless it started to feel.
