It was overrated. The battlefield franchise has the biggest discrepancy between what content creators SAY about them and what they players actually like. It's like there are things people say just for internet points, but player data just doesn't support it.

The fuck are you talking about? there's still numerous active Conquest servers on 4 with map rotations going. It's all very much dependent on timezones. To state there is only one metro server going is absolute nonsense.

I have a theory about this because maybe a lot of people were in the same boat as me. My PC couldn't run BF2 for the longest time, and by the time my pc was decent, Bad Company 2 was right around the corner. I like the concept of mechs and flying carriers. Blame Dice for getting rid of the community rental servers when you complain about cheaters. There was a way to solve this and it was having proper moderation methods on persistent servers. Because BF V had the exact same issue as BF 2042/portal with community servers disappearing when no one is on them. Therefore no persistence/no community and no one cares.

You can easily go into any server that says its 64 player full and see all the players actually being there. I've never seen a server that was actually empty but said it had 63 players on, all of those people were always playing. Portal/2042 has the highest potential for spoofing because it used bots.

I saw an EA shill channel on youtube repeating that same talking about why the server browser was 'oudated'.

Do i have to install BF4 right now, go server hopping on all of the conquest servers and point out how many people are online by screenshots? because I'll do that if need be. If you don't think I'm not autistic enough to do that I'll prove you wrong.

Battlefield 4 is basically Battlefield 3.5 but with worse maps.

BF4 just has more to it at the end of the day. More guns, more customization. You could be 500 hours into BF4 and still not unlock everything. There's more things to tinker with.

BF3 has better maps, but there's no "Battlefield laboratory" aspect to it were you tinker with gun attachments and try to optimize them. Not as in depth anyway.

How it's been for years for me even before BF 2042 reveal (which caused an absurd spike in players in 4) was two full conquest large map rotation servers (for AUS/NZ) and one full operation lockers server in my region. FPSG servers. Some people don't like them on here, i think an NZ anon specifically posts webms of the admins being jet assholes. But I've put up with them for the longest time since it's the only way i could continue playing Battlefield.

But the thing is that it's playerbase just remains loyal to 4 and i can't imagine the point of where people stop being loyal to it. In a way that none of the refractor era games can even compare. But only more time can answer that question about whether 4 can outlast the refractor communities. Warsaw Revamped will be a testament to how long it will live is my predictions.

I bought it on release and spent hundreds of hours on it so I don't feel like I need to find niche server with few players just to play it now. If DICE ever can make another BC that is as good and improve upon on BC2, then I'll play it.
BC2 was great on beta, great on release, and got even better every update. Back then, DICE didn't have a habit of a broken "beta", broken release, and patches that might make the game worse.

That and it's the last game DICE offered rental servers on, which ensures in most instances people know where to go to find the games. I don't know how popular V will remain because it's a pretty butchered system compared to everything of the past, technically still a server browser but no persistence in created servers so it's only half the same idea. BFV's numbers are inflated because of the Battle Royale shit they started shipping with the experience.

The problem is that 3 was cannibalised by 4 since it's similar modern warfare.
1 and V have their own different gameplay experiences.
I think 2042 continue to live (albeit with less people) since the operators and the map sizes are unique.
In a couple years some content creator will say that 2042 didn't deserve to die and want 128 man servers back compared to the claustrophobia of bf6 and the player count will have another surge.

When that eventually becomes a thing for the modded version of BF4 then i can't imagine why anyone would want to play 2042 again. Of course there will inevitably false nostalgia over it on the other hand.

But it's not like 2042 actually did anything new or that different to the point of where it 'didn't deserve to die'. It never took the same risks of battlefield 2142 and Hardline. If anything I'd just call it Battlefield Apex Legends or something. It lifted ideas from popular existing games and barely did much with those ideas.
