I've always thought that the attempts to do cross media with the Sonic and Mario movies was futile attempts to make the cash flow between the brands as they intended.
When you made the Mario Movie, you just told Gen Alpha "this is a kids movie for little kids, haha, Mario is for kids! Cute!" and when they reach 12 they won't play Mario games because it's associated with a kids film.
Sonic's attempt to repopularize itself started with Frontiers and ended with the Sonic movie. Then Sonic Movie 2 and 3 did well, but by 3 I think they're testing the limits of how far the new childish fandom of Sonic will last. I've seen backpacks in clothes stores with Sonic on it, since the Sonic Movie came out. Kids gotta be cringing at Sonic at like 8 or 10 years old now.

It only ends up associating these brands with "Movies from when I was a kid" and that is never the same magic as growing up with game franchises that took you somewhere deeper and made you curious.

Gen X and Zillenials playing Mario when they're 30 or 40 isn't just them holding on to their childhoods. If that was true I'd still be playing with Bionicle or collecting plush dolls.

Mario games were kind of "prestige" at one point, weirdly enough. Mario 3 on the NES was like that time's latest Call of Duty release, something that was just seen as "central" to the pioneering of game consoles. Mario 64 was similar, and it has an atmosphere too.

But the movies are slop, solely enjoyable for the "look it's them, it's them!" appeal for fans, and loud and colorful enough to make kids laugh. But they're absolutely awful movies in the end, that won't build an actual fan culture. They'll only mislead people to think the games are based on the movies.

Lazy parents and the abundance of slop have bred a generation that doesn't watch movies, just short form recaps and scene highlights, and doesn't play actual games with a story, a style or personality, just products designed to continue selling skins, and generic garbage made by other kids in hopes that they too can swindle enough robux from them through gambling games and gamepasses.
I wish I could look 20-30 years into the future when it's gen alpha's turn to make media when they've never properly consumed any.
