I think Nintendo wanted to delay the Switch 2 for another year but they can’t afford to lose hype now that handheld PCs are popping up everywhere. They're likely going to dedicate a portion of a Nintendo Direct specifically to updating the Xenoblade games. You can see it now considering they all use dynamic resolution and it's as simple as just giving them updates to make it 1080p or something. Monolith Soft is also in Nintendo's good graces it seems so I can easily see them doing that.

I expected exactly what they gave which was a decent bump in specs somewhere better than the Steam Deck OLED but worse than a Rog Ally or X, focus on using AI upscaling for certain things, and an improvement on Switch 1 games. You should have had a reasonable understanding that visually they were not going to be a huge bump just from how the UMPCs had to deal with that in price vs. performance and this was just going to be another handheld form factor. A Rog Ally X-level jump for example would be a crazy expectation. What we got is pretty solid all things considered.

I just grabbed mine earlier today after putting money away for a decent while and primarily bought it for Switch 1 reasons and the Switch 2 stuff is a bonus. I never had an OLED so it was a straight upgrade in every regard, and having things like the kickstand, better Joycons, a better looking screen, and the better user experience feels worth it. I can't tell you how it felt like weights were lifted playing Pokemon Violet on a Switch 2. Literally every technical issue just disappeared. There's still minor drops but nothing like it was. Same deal with having benefits for basically my entire library. I was holding off on playing a lot of my S1 games simply because the performance on the S1 sucked so much and the S2 can bruteforce a lot of the performance issues away (Not MK8D, I just never got around to playing the DLC years ago and used it to stress test how I feel about the system).

What are the chances the Wii Virtual Console becomes a thing on the Switch 2 with the Wii Remote pointer mapped to the new Joycon’s mouse controls? The Bad: Mario Kart World had potential (the actual tracks aren't bad when you actually get to fucking play them) but is fundamentally flawed and Nintendo at this point has basically just doubled down on those flawed aspects of its design when the playerbase found ways to work around it. Ultimately as it stands MKW is the Bottom tier of Mario Kart, my reluctance to call it worst only being because i never played Advance/Super Circuit and the Arcade titles.

I recently got one and my biggest problem with the device so far is the lack of games. It's kind of a unique thing to me since I know not everyone is going to have a Deck and an Ally too, but the Switch 1's big appeal to me was a handheld that could play console games. Now I have a ROG Ally that can play third party better and Steam and PC offers your more flexibility. So seeing all the Switch 1 games upgraded to Switch 2 doesn't do a whole lot for me and now I'm just waiting for the next Nintendo exclusive.

Really, the key thing to remember is that every other nation is paying the equivalent of $500 burger bucks if not more. That includes poorer countries where the price is simply unreasonable for them. Japan is the only country where that's not the case and it's not like the consoles are made there, even the JP models are made in China and Vietnam.

The rest of the world is subsidizing the $10 Nintendo loses on their Japanese only models by paying $100 over cost and the Switch 1 sold 4:1 overseas so yeah. Microsoft and Sony were both willing to sell consoles at a loss initially, Nintendo is the only one that wants to make $100 of profit off each sale and the hardware is weaker because of it. If Nintendo sold at a $10 loss everywhere and offset it by having $80 games then you'd have double the storage so Game Key Cartridges would be slightly less frustrating and an OLED screen for the same price point and as a result, much better battery life. Instead you as a consumer have to pay out of pocket for an $60 micro sd express card to double your storage and buy a future revision for a better screen/battery life.
