With mods to fix the framerate issues, Blighttown is actually one of the most underrated areas to explore in Dark Souls.

Underrated? It's one of the most iconic levels in all of gaming. Who is underrating it?

I have noticed a β€œmost of Dark Souls 1 sucks” opinion trend in the last couple years. I assume it’s Elden Ring secondaries getting filtered by actual level design.

The framerate issues have literally not been an issue since the game was ported to PC. What sort of toaster are you playing this on? Even the Switch port doesn't struggle with Blighttown.

Quelaag is a much better fight than either Leechmonger or Dirty Colossus. Demon's Souls is still my favorite, though.

undead burg, parish, and lower undead burg are the best parts. when i was still enjoying the game, i would just stop once i hit sens fortress because the rest of the levels were boring. sens is fun the first time, maybe the second, but the gimmick of the traps falls apart when you know about them before hand and its wait for it go then walk along

dark souls 1 copied everything from VoD so it lost a lot of its luster right there. the low frames, the dodgy swaying beams that you can absolutely fall off by seemingly no fault of your own, the mosquitos just an annoyance. yeah, just shoot them with a bow, but its still annoying. the framerate issues, even that elevator at the end. and the boss is kind of a letdown. i know you like tits in games, but (You) aren't fighting her tits. Maneater Mildred was fun, even though she was just a callback to Demon's Souls, and I do appreciate you can skip half the level. But I don't know if I can say Blightown is good.

It's your duty to make sure any first time player does not pick thief or master key.
Second playthrough and beyond is when it is ok to pick the master key.

I prefer to take a different gift and then sprint through new londo to kill ingward, open the floodgates, and retrieve the valley of drakes key from the top of blighttown. Then it's as if you had the key in the first place, since besides opening that one door it's fucking worthless

I respect the hustle but personally I put off going to New Londo for as long as I can. Same with the Catacombs. Not until I have the Lordvessel.
Plus the real reason to take the Master Key is that I'm lazy. I don't want to have to go out of my way just to get the cage key for Big Hat.

Dark Souls 1 is very weak but blight town is pretty cool. The only genuinely weak levels in DS1 are the demon ruins and lost izalith, crystal cave, valley of the drakes, and Anor Londo.

Sen's Fortress is by far the best level in the game. It's decently challenging, not unfair, has all sorts of neat little mechanics, and is filled to the brim with secrets and optional challenges. It's on par with Elden Ring legacy dungeon level design.

there's really no reason not to get the master key even if you don't do the most common stuff with it like the upper blight town skip. no other starting gift even slightly compares.

It lets you unlock and kill Lautrec without needing the cell key
It lets you into Havel's tower without needing to go kill the fucking moonlight butterfly
The other uses are very minor but those two alone are HUGE, on top of early access to valley of the drakes without having to fight ten million ghosts

If the developers didn't want you to use the Master Key they wouldn't give you the ability. Part of the game is choosing whether you get the mysterious item or not. On my first playthrough I picked Master Key and despite it being completely different from regular playthrough it was still kino and I went through some locations in reverse by accident.
The entire concept of "playing the game right" by explicitly not using Master Key is antithetical to the game itself. You are meant to make mistakes, be unorthodox and not follow the beaten path.
Everyone giving you tips about Souls games before you start telling you do something or avoid doing something is missing the point of these games. They are designed for blind playthroughs and the game design accommodates for that.

Crystal Cave and Valley of Drakes are pretty basic (but cool) offshoot areas that you spend like 5 minutes in. What is there to even complain about?

Valley of the drakes isn't bad, but it's literally just a single hallway, and shouldn't have been given a titlecard
Crystal cave is okay if you just beeline to seathe but the optional parts are fucking cancer
Anor Londo is overly linear, lacking in enemy variety, and almost comically short in the context of its presentation.
Anonymous No.718369552
>>718369228
The snipers really aren't that bad considering the level is built around the player constantly having plenty of cover to hide behind. Most players just aren't paying enough attention their first time through.

>it's bad because it was titled
It's bad because a level being 1 hallway with 5 enemies and no boss is bad. If it didn't have a title we wouldn't have to judge it as a level.
>it's bad because optional part I won't specify
All of the invisible bridges except the mandatory ones, the moonlight butterflies, the most annoying crystal lizards in the game
>it's bad because it's linear (meaningless criticism),
It's not meaningless. Other levels have multiple progression paths. Anor londo is completely linear with no deviations longer than a single room.
>ignore the fact that it has a massive hidden level within it,
The painted world is rad but is not anor londo
