I'm the guy you responded to and it's just not true. The problem is that a lot of the standard file formats are proprietary and thus closed source. Thus, the FOSS versions are doing their best to guess how certain things work. It's like the NTFS driver on Linux. NTFS is still closed source, so the Linux version isn't operating on a defined spec. I had a coworker get stung by this. She was using Libreoffice to edit her timesheets, and the higher ups told her to do what I was doing instead (literally just using the online version of Microsoft Word).
I say this as a permanent Linux convert: Linux word processing just isn't up to Microsoft Office. And it's Microsoft's fault, as outlined above.
