Although I'm not particularly a fan of how every other batrider run is trying to reach the final boss at full extends and praying the overlaps will be dodgeable.

It's fine, I know that. Most of the game isn't an issue, the problem is how random the final boss can be, and how some attack combinations become nearly undodgeable. That means you either get very lucky or spam it with bombs, the latter requiring some tight resource management in a game where using bombs is important to the scoring in the first place.

I don't think it's that bad if your rank isn't too high. Only the green laser phase is really random and then you can sit on the side of the screen to outrange one of his shoulders. There's a lot of nuances and tiny little strategies to remove elements of randomness. This is one of the reasons garegga, and it's successor, batrider, are so highly praised. I think batrider is a bit more interesting than the former however, plus it's got a shitload of optional stuff and tons of characters.

It is that bad. Green lasers can come out at any part after the opener with the laser wheels, and it's not the only one that can create shitty situations.
Also whoever praises Raizing design is deranged, you can appreciate the games in spite of their weirdness with rank management and stuff, but that's the worst side of arcade.

Actually deranged. You can appreciate games without sucking off even the worst parts. Much like DOJ is cool but it had very questionable ship balance, and it doesn't look like most players liked the part where you lose extends before the second loop since it was removed in black label.

First, I think you should step back and realize not every discussion here is a war between your side and whoever you perceive as opponents.
>Games can and should be complex.
And this claim has quite a few issues. Complexity for the sake of complexity doesn't necessarily lead to better gameplay, this kind of mindset is what led the modern industry to believe people don't want to play shmups or other "simple" arcade-like stuff, but rather an open world/sandbox-y game with a shitton of possible interactions or systems in place.
But even that aside, there are infinite ways to add complexity and strategy to your game that's not about lowering an invisible number by killing yourself in certain parts, if anything that's just a very awkward thing you include into your routing without thinking much about it.

>but rather an open world/sandbox-y game with a shitton of possible interactions or systems in place
That's not complexity. The complexity of 8ing games is thinking about things that aren't just dodging bullets, actually using bombs instead of just hoarding them the entire game, thinking carefully about powerups instead of just gobbling them up, assessing whether or not going for extends is worth it, bypassing extends to create max extends, avoiding or triggering extra events, adjusting your run dynamically, etc. It's a game that demands neuron activity that you can keep playing and learning for ages. Even after your first 1cc there's different characters and styles that completely change up how you approach the game. It's a masterpiece. There is so much more to shmups than CAVE. If you don't like that stuff, well you have no right to cry about 2hu.

>Just that they have very questionable design choices
What about them are questionable? Ranking is an excellent mechanic and neither battle garegga nor batrider require suicides to 1cc, and unlike garegga, batrider doesn't even require it to do a low rank method. It's quite accessible compared to Garegga. If you feel the game is unfair you are likely overlooking something.

> Ranking is an excellent mechanic
Cool opinion bro. How about you just design your stages to be difficult instead? Anyway

>What about them are questionable?
Using the other post as reference:
>actually using bombs
Other than the part where you can tie scoring to bombing, there is another, much more straightforward way to make the player use bombs: make shit difficult to avoid.
>thinking carefully about powerups instead of just gobbling them up
Getting powerups beyond your max level is already pointless, as far pure survival goes anyway. Same for extends if there is already a cap... why should I bother getting the extend item at all in such a situation? What kind of complex choice is the player even making? This is definitely where you made it very obvious how much you are mindlessly sucking 8ing cock while complaining about people sucking off CAVE instead, couldn't be a more blatant projection if you tried.
>adjusting your run dynamically
Ideally you want to avoid that outside of purely casual runs, you will mostly reach the same score thresholds, use bombs in the same spots, dodge shit in the same way, and so on.
>there's different characters and styles that completely change up how you approach the game
Many games do this, 8ing didn't invent having multiple ships and making them play differently enough.

I'm playing "The Girl From Gunma Kai" and it's really fun. The songs are loud but cool.
The game doesn't save your high score, however, and since the game is easy, scoring should be the focus of the experience.
There are also some secret boxes that you need to shoot to unlock certain things, but they are very difficult to see at times. If you're playing to unlock the secret levels and you lose one of them, you lose your entire run, which can be very frustrating.

Sometimes I wonder if there is a lot of input lag on my setup or I'm just pressing buttons too slow.
Since I'm recording with a mame overlay to show inputs, I can see that it matches what happened in the game but I'm still fairly sure I bombed that shit before getting hit.

Hi, I've been developing a Shump-like game for about a year, but more focused on movement and power-up configuration.

I think it's sacrilegious in the community, but the game can be controlled with either a mouse or a controller.

Gamepad players have dashes available to quickly escape from certain positions.

The ship has two configurations: cannons, bullet types, modifiers, and power-ups.

I'd like to hear your thoughts.
