So is this game essentially a single play game?
I am tempted to play it but I want an actual experience with others around me, not just a solo game grinding for no reason. It just sounds like similar to Diablo in terms of how "massively multiplayer" it is.

im brand new to the game and while it is mainly 'singleplayer' there is definitely a sense of community doing the same activity around others. Also going in blind and asking randoms for advice help has made the multiplayer aspect more prevalent. Endgame in Runescape is a bunch of different stuff, and the content doesn't get removed.
I'm struggling to even put into words how they differ. Since you don't lose progress or stuff gets reset, what was endgame five years ago is still content you'll be doing. Not likely to skip over it because it's old or outdated.

You'll be doing stuff "around" others more than "with" others, meaning you're all doing the same activity in the same place, but there is no need to group up or coordinate for the most part. In a way it's more relaxed because it's all individual responsibility so you can just learn at your own pace, and the little amount of group responsibility there is, if any, gets covered naturally by the sheer amount of players partaking in the activity.
There is some content where you do group up and each player has a role, but that's usually later into the game.

There are some things that require co op. There’s this grey metal chest plate you can only get by doing a mini game and you’ll want to join a discord call to coordinate with whatever randoms you pair up with. I forget why you have to unlock it, I think it’s so you can wear dragon platebody or something maybe. But it’s something you’ll want to do if you want best in slot (BiS). They have servers dedicated to specific mini games so it’s not difficult finding co op players.

Barrows upkeep is a pitiful amount. it takes forever to degrade and it costs 300k maximum. the cost goes down the higher your skill and if you have a repair stand in your POH. It is the next upgrade, yeah
Obsidian is gross and Dchain is not worth it at all. Bandos is the next step after Barrows. But barrows is definitely what you want.

I've been playing since the 2000s, so I kind understand what it is that I want from the game. When I started again in 2022, I wanted to PK again like I did back in the 2000s, so I created a Berserker Pure account. That took a little while, a couple of months. Goal accomplished. I PK'd for a while, made some money here and there. Then I decided that I wanted to do more PVM, so I have to upgrade the account to a Maxed Med account. That took a couple of months. Goal accomplished etc. I'm basically constantly wanting to upgrade my account to do things in the game.

Now there's a wiki for every kill efficiency, plugins automating your eyeballs, and every boss is built around a spreadsheet-tier DPS check. Runescape is not a WoW clone, there's no "reach max level before the real game begins", every part of it is relevant, and content with lower level requirements gets released all the time.
Levels are for the most part a suggestion, there are some baseline requirements but they tend to be easy to get, and having higher levels or better equipment only makes you more efficient.
For example, usually you'll be grinding a boss for some drops killing it over and over without a lockout or a high respawn timer, doing it at the minimum level will mean you'll have less room for error and you'll have to go back to the bank and resupply after every kill, whereas getting good at it and having good gear and higher stats means you'll be able to do multiple kills without leaving.

I am pro-GE. You also don't have to use those new training methods as the old ones still exist. Those new training methods are the new minigames for certain skills, right? A lot of those minigames require a lot of attention, so most of the time they're more rewarding, but require more effort. Most of the time, I prefer methods that are low intensity, and the old methods are mostly just that.

Very exhilarating social interaction.
The real community was still incredibly active training, bossing or playing minigames. The game was still getting 200k concurrent players down from its 250k peak and the GE became the new social hub instead of the draynor, varrock and seers banks.

Plenty of mini games to do with others, WC has pretty much turned into group content, there's raids you gotta do with premade groups, there's quests you need another player for to complete, and if you don't play ironman then you get to play into the whole economy aspect of the game with trading and moneymaking.
