The game is basically just a simple life sim. You play as a human in a village of cute anthro animals.

You can go around the village, talk and get to know the other villagers, visit their homes, give them gifts, send them letters, celebrate theirs (and your) birthdays, etc.
You can explore the area and catch bugs and fishes, and sell them or put them in a museum.
In the 3DS one, you could make a hymn for your village, and create a flag for it.
You can buy and dress your character in several different outfits, and make some custom designs.
You can improve your home and decorate it as you prefer, with objects and wallpapers and stuff
You can plant trees, shrubs and flowers, and build some stuff around the village, like fountains and benches and stuff
There's also some minigames and special events, like in christmas, new year, etc.

That's about it as I remember. It's simple and cute.
