There is nothing wrong with a character being initially unpleasant. It creates struggle and depth that makes it so much sweeter when they are conquered. I hope you're not going to continue trying to argue in the sense that there are limitations in writing and that certain things can't be done.
Japanese characters being too much into the protagonist from the get go, being too pleasant with no flaws, or my favorite they have fake flaws that only exist to make them even more endearing. This all makes the characters feel hollow and uninteresting and extremely samey. You can do everything in writing so you're just incapable if you can't create some real depth, individuality, flaws and still create something very endearing, likable and cute.
