There is nothing wrong with a character being initially unpleasant. It creates struggle and depth that makes it so much sweeter when they are conquered. I hope you're not going to continue trying to argue in the sense that there are limitations in writing and that certain things can't be done.

Japanese characters being too much into the protagonist from the get go, being too pleasant with no flaws, or my favorite they have fake flaws that only exist to make them even more endearing. This all makes the characters feel hollow and uninteresting and extremely samey. You can do everything in writing so you're just incapable if you can't create some real depth, individuality, flaws and still create something very endearing, likable and cute.

People are afraid to use unpleasant things in story telling, weakening the narrative considerably. And you can create the circumstances in your story for something unpleasant to turn pleasant. People need to stop forcing this idea that what the japanese have created is the end all be all. The anime artstyle already removes the most pungent things people would loath. It's especially with the anime artstyle you can go all out with characters because the characters are so attractive and pleasant by default just with the visuals.

Some absurdly high quality VN engines like the one from waga himegimi ni eikan o even have this in a premium version where hovering over the line in history log shows you dynamically the full representation of that line with portrait and background.

The function is good but the way it's implemented feels cheap and you can trigger it too easy by accident. It's like the save function in RPG Maker games. It's good but it cheapens all RPG Maker to a massive degree being able to save everywhere at any point. This is only a problem because almost no dev using these defaults ever changes the defaults. This is the price that comes with a brainless engine and the people using them.

Personally my favorite feature a VN can have is a timeline where you can jump around in. This is really rare though.

Yes but we are talking about highly specialized engines. You are always going to rely on what was readily made to be used. If you want some actual freedom it's going to be vastly more difficult than if you tried to implement the same in a sandbox or custom engine. That's why even the highest effort products made in renpy or RPG Maker will never use those quirks associated with them and why no game made with them can jump much further than what is offered.

Just as an example something like moving mouths or blinking which you see in some higher production VNs would be more difficult to implement in renpy and the result would be shittier than if implemented in a sandbox engine because renpy doesn't come with a good interface for such a thing.

I'll ask here: Have any of you guys had slowdown issues with renpy games? I'll load a game and it runs fine but after a few minutes it slows to a crawl and takes several seconds just to advance text. If I quicksave/load the framerate goes back to normal and becomes responsive again before starting to slow again. Is there some caching issue somewhere maybe?
