It has pretty piss poor exploration, I thought. It severely lacked in roleplaying and dungeon. It's still worth at least one playthrough, even though I have my fair share of gripes with the plot.
It's a terrible story for a video game plus it's obsessed with philosophical concepts it only really pretends to understand. The game seems to be interested in the subjectivity of reality and the nature at which we internalize and comprehend that which is around us which is a cool idea except the writers never truly play with this idea like they seem to intend to. Even the big reveal at the end when you're character is revealed as an idealized reflection of your dead soul's hopes and dreams is sort of revealed and then tossed away. The game is full of dream and dream-like sequences but it's always crystal clear by the end as to what is real and what is not except maybe the Dreamflower ending. The game is also full of some of the most pseudo-intellectual hot takes on human nature that it comes off as Philosophy of Religion 101 student sniffing his own farts. This is extremely prevalent with the writing of Jespar when he starts being the author's mouthpiece for what he thinks the reason for all the ills in the world are. I don't mind the author wanting to encourage the player to question the things around them much like he does, but he doesn't quite achieve that. It either makes the same fart-sniffers clap their hands, or it turns off people who find the fact that you want to preach to me about human fragility in a fantasy video game where I kill goat-werewolves a little weird.

Why is being "edgy" considered negatuve? Not enough Marvel quips in the writing? Not enough bear romances and epic talking squirells?
We can't have a serious and edgy fantasy world for once because..?

It's the same basic combat but generally more lethal for both player and enemy and a major change is that there's no instant healing, all healing is over time, potions give large heals over time in combat while food gives substantial heals over long periods outside of combat, but also using potions or healing spells also increases your mana sickness which gives you debuffs when it reaches certain thresholds and the item to cure mana sickness is uncommon.

Enderal's story was pretty shit.
I'll take Skyrim's horrendous but basic main plot over the ravings of a philosophy undergrad who failed most of his classes.

From what I heard, there's two versions of the book: one is Enderal, the other is Enderal but not Enderall. Been debating on getting a copy, but not sure which.

from what iยดve heard the original book was about Jesper in Enderal, but then the lead writer lost the IP rights to enderal or something so he had to slighty change some names for legal reasons but everything else remained the same

One of those games I get depressed towards the end because I'm going to leave the world they made. Clearly so much love, care and atmosphere poured into it's environments. But it's biggest weakness for me will always be how unfinished the world is outside of the main quest and the starting region. Mods can fix some of that, but it doesn't fill the hole much, and it's a testament to how special the game is to make me wonder what if. What if you could visit the Painted Rooms under the town, what if you could visit the Alchemy College in the North, what if the quest to the cultist island had a real conclusion, what if you could enter the burnt out chapel with Vatyrs outside of it, what if the desert town was expanded just to half Ark's size, that emptiness to everywhere in Enderal.

Edgy as a derogative is generally targeted at works that try to have violent content for the sake of shock value over anything else. So it would be a negative if it was being used appropriately.
In this case people see Enderal's introduction sequence and write it off as edgy based on that and that alone which isn't entirely unfair given that it's intended to shock you but it isn't giving the rest of the game a fair shake when it isn't like that. If anything it's the game's fault for having a poor introduction that doesn't match the tone of the rest of it.

I liked it quite a lot. Jespar's character writing as the protagonist is pretty much cut straight from the game (although several years younger), with a few moments of know-it-all preaches included. But at the same time he's very much a coping, traumatized, degenerate fuck up so it makes for an interesting character fault where he gets preachy then beats himself up for it or wishes he hadn't.

I mainly have one minor gripe with its writing in that the main cast are, in-world, all born and raised in far flung corners of the globe, but it feels like they all speak a bit too similarly. Its like if an american, a russian, and a spainard met up in the philippines and for some reason all use british slang like "Bloody Hell".

Other than that it's pretty well written for the guys first book and has and one of my favorite twists on a character's "death" I've read in awhile.

didn't like it. as the other anon says:
it's shit. it's autofartsniffercentral.
it's full of deep themes that aren't touched at all or so in your face, that one can predict a story 30h before it unravels.
and the magic system got "revamped".... it wanted to be harder, but you can cheese it so simple, that this has to be intentional. utter bullshit

Hm, yes... Halo Reach, Heavy Rain, Super Maro Galaxy 2? Wow, I didn't know they made a second one!
