Steam's media player was (is) inferior and Valve wasn't prepared to do the legal legwork to distribute movies. Money had nothing to do with it as it costs virtually nothing to host anything and any form of digital rental or sale was almost pure profit with little overhead to worry about.
Most didnt know it exists and sales were incredibly low.
Steams movie player was also ass nad people wanted the ability to download their bought anime onto their harddrives.

You'd have to ask crunchyroll not steam, they were providing the anime. I really do wonder how this even worked, crunchyroll themselves are already only provided with a license of the anime by the actual publisher, and then they lend them out to steam to sell on their platform too...? Must've been a logistical shitshow
I wonder who did non-anime movies, netflix? I bought American Psycho on steam
