Drill the kanas into your head
Then learn like any other language with constant repetition
Learning Kanji by itself is optional cause you'll learn them by learning the words
Also learn how to speak it
It's not terrible difficult unless you wanna do the pitch accent bullshit but you don't have to

I learned hiragana and katakana (sometimes mistake ke ge etc) years ago and I started learning kanji when I was traveling for my studies but now I don't travel anymore so I stopped.

My problem is I don't consume much Japanese media, I very rarely watch anime, I only play a few H games most of the time they get translated or I can translate them with mtool.

I don't plan on ever going to Japan for fun or for work so I don't see any reason to finish learning japanese

ringotan - pretty good, but i don't like word definition choice, there's no kana digraphs and diactrics, and no compounds, also it seems that it's been abandoned
kanji study - it's okay but kinda costs a fair bit
renshuu - it's okay for words but writing is nonexistent as far as i'm concerned, unless i missed something

It's literally just vocab. Once you know a word, learning its kanji is easy (and vice versa).
Plus, each kanji typically has its own sound and meaning, so it becomes easier as you go. Most kanji are compound words, much like the English "roadblock," "highway," "homework," and so on.

Just read and listen. When you hear a word being used, it's easier to remember it when written. Reading will also test your recall as is because you want to figure out the story, not just the individual sentence.

It does have some amount of initial grind involved, though that's true of learning any new language. Ultimately however it's just first memorizing hiragana and katakana (a few week ordeal at most), then picking up a grammar book (such as Tae Kim), some beginner vocab Anki decks like Core series, while starting to slowly grind kanji with RTK1 / Kanjidamage+ / whatever method works best for you (preferably as early as possible but at a pace that's comfortable for you personally). After you feel comfortable enough with the basics, just pick any untranslated media you're interested in and start consooming. Use dictionary software and browser add-ons to help yourself read, and add new stuff you come across to your personal vocabulary / kanji deck.

Rinse and repeat until you have enough language knowledge under your belt and can slowly phase out any learning materials and software crutches.

Classes can be very useful if you also want to practice your speaking and writing skills. Years ago before I went to uni, I self-studied and cleared N1 on my own but was absolute shit at producing anything in Japanese until I actually enrolled on some courses, and was forced to interact with people while having someone better than me correcting my mistakes.

Worst thing about many classes in my opinion (having both participated as a student and taught them) is that most common workbooks and course programmes tend to start teaching grammar in a fickity fuckity retarded order with polite desu-masu register, while having the students memorize basic common phrases without teaching the underlying structures until much later on. Many courses also postpone kana and especially kanji, when in truth you should ditch romaji and start grinding the former ASAP, and the latter too at a slower but consistent pace. I try to encourage my own students to use other sources in addition to the official course materials, and add optional extra slides that actually explain how shit works.

I'm on a younger side than many of you
As an even younger lad I've had a period of strong obsession over a single piece of Japanese media, which eventually led me to enrolling into an oriental studies course in my college
I probably could've learned the language on my own, and for I a while that's what I've been doing, but at some point I decided that learning it in college would be the best option
To this very day I still have second thoughts and fear that turning my hobby into my future profession occupation was not the right move
Probably going to try to pass N2 this winter, wish me luck

- Beginner vocabulary: Core 2000 (and other Core series decks). If you happen to download a version with stock images, remove them, as those take attention away from the text.
- Kanji: Kanjidamage Plus+, RTK1 or whatever deck that corresponds to the kanji learning resource you're using.

And most importantly there's your own custom deck you create from the media you've consumed. If you have shit like ITH output, light novels, websites or any Japanese text in machine readable format, it shouldn't take too much time to create your own vocab cards. Don't know how shit works nowadays but there used to be an add-on called Yomichan that'd streamline the process a bit.

You're doing it wrong. Memorizing vocab without Kanji would be a nightmare. Also it's not "on top of" hiragana and katakana. You can memorize kana in like a day. Then you use the kana to learn the kanji and vocab at the same time.

How the fuck are you even studying vocab without kana or kanji? That doesn't make any sense.

What do you think activates your neurons more, a clip from your favourite vidya or a banner of text with the word "orange" plastered next to it. It might take 30 seconds to make the card but I'd rather have my card have me recall 10 things than 1 in a sanitized boring 'grind' app

>Bro fuck any sort of studying only retards use Anki or read grammar rules. I passed N1 and got a japanese wife and job just by watching Naruto for a few weeks
fag: They're lying.

Yeah, consume Japanese while you're studying but be realistic. First and foremost: in the beginning you're not worried about understanding everything. Understanding ANYTHING is a victory. Get comfortable with not understanding a lot. Focus on what parts you do understand. You'll revisit it one day and it will feel amazing how much more you understand than the first time.

Start with some easier shit like ใ‚ˆใคใฐใจ, ใกใณใพใ‚‹ๅญใกใ‚ƒใ‚“ใ€ใ—ใ‚ใใพใ‚ซใƒ•ใ‚ง, News Web Easy, or any podcasts aimed at learners (there are tons). You can challenge yourself with harder stuff and things that are more interesting, but don't go expecting to just absorbing the language and understanding everything like it's your native language when you play your favorite game in the original Japanese.
>>718404757

well even with drawing you gotta start somewhere. no matter what you do, there a gradients of skill. some assholes (like me) pick up the guitar but never learn anything more than iron man or songs comprised of power chords, meanwhile more dedicated autists can rip out eddie van halen licks and make it look easy.

if you learn nothing else from japanese culture, learn that dedication leads to excellence. only, we in the west here are less likely to dedicate our lives to plying one particular skill or trade. it's rare to be a jack of all trades who is actually more proficient than the most basic motherfucker who dedicates himself exclusively to that trade or skill though.

Having learned Japanese on my own and currently trying to learn to draw I feel like the former is much easier to do. Even if you end up using non-optimal methods and have slowdowns sometimes, it's ultimately just about learning a relatively small set of rules that get constantly reused, then brute force memorizing the rest through repetition and immersion. As long as you don't stop doing it and keep a consistent pace with new stuff you'll eventually get better at listening and reading comprehension, and become fluent enough to consume any media. Every single word you read is one step closer to your goal. It's near impossible to fuck yourself over.

Drawing meanwhile is some kind of eldritch clusterfuck hobby invented by satanic aliens where it's extremely difficult to self-evaluate your own progress and figure out where exactly you should be improving, and it's very easy to plateau due to lack of proper direction.

I mean the untranslated Touhou material and miscellaneous hentai doujins aren't going to translate themselves, but they aren't much of an incentive to really put effort and learn. On the irl side of things we barely have any Japanese living here and there isn't any tangible benefit to learning anyway.
On the other hand we have a lot of Russians and it was pretty useful.

But the hardest and most real "blocks your path" is ACTUALLY conversing with somebody who speaks a foreign language as >>718399493 says. You can watch your animays and listen to your musics and shit but getting into a face-to-face conversation without stuttering or mixing shit up is the true test.

NTA, there is so much nuance lost in translations, and reading/listening is a totally different skill to hone compared to speaking/listening. many anki only retards will struggle to hold a simple japanese conversation even though they know 90% of the vocabulary. he presents the topic/subject marker particles as being directly translatable into English, like genki, but applies it to the more complicated use of particles. This combines with him being ESL and struggling to use any sort of proper abstraction. Many learners will actually think the use of ga translates to "the one or thing who". In reality its mostly used to indicate that a predicate (the part of a sentence that makes an observation) applies to another part of the sentence. In reality nothing translates well to English for comparison
X ใŒ Y desu
"the observation that Y is, is true about X"

erufu wa {mimi ga nagai}

in general grinding is pointless because basically all learning materials are compromised and designed to teach you wrong (with the exception of maybe cure dolly, who still gives you a laconic version without the full context to make you feel like you are learning, but still)
you are legitimately better off jumping straight into immersion and let your pattern recognition braincells (who you were literally evolved to have in spades) do the job for you
it will be faster too, i have seen retards grinding for half a decade that are still worse than N5 and someone immersing daily can reach close to fluency in 16-24 months
at most you will have to "grind" hiragana and katakana to start off and kanji radicals so you can actually distinguish kanji from one another (and guess the reading 80% of the time) but that's kind of it

Even the Japanese people I know IRL report a similar experience.
The characters you can expect an average Japanese to write by hand these days are the very core characters as well as those in his name and his address.
After all practically all the writing you do is done on electronic devices these days with Japanese input, which is like cycling with training wheels.

>Overall it's been a successful approach, and I recommend it to new learners unless they have a particular interest in being able to write by hand or they feel strongly that writing the characters helps them remember them.
>It's only rarely that I have to write anything other than my own name in Japanese. I've practiced my address but writing it in English is fine in 99% of situations. I did it for 6 month unfortunately. Yeah it helped, but I could've gotten faster results by just reading words containing those kanji instead). Then start learning by playing press x to continue games in japanese. Look up every word you don't know. Eventually you will have encountered so much stuff and gained familiarity that you can read anything you want. I did this for 2 years every single day for 8+ hours. because that's the self-crippling cucked soi language learner mentality. you learn what you want. language is not a cumulative process. its difficulty is schizophrenic: you aren't exposed just to "stuff in 1st and 2nd year," so it makes no sense to constrain yourself to a subset. if you discard words that are "too hard" you'll want to kick yourself later down the line when you realize you should have been writing them down on a separate notebook
