Modern Kirby fans need to understand something before they start getting on Sakurai's case. This isn't the game for rosterfagging like Mario Kart or Smash where you choose your favorite character because Kirby's copy abilities are a central mechanic. The original had Meta Knight and Dedede but they were clearly not designed to provide a full or equivalent experience to playing as Kirby. The Air Ride machines are the real roster, and they're largely original creations, and so are the tracks. If you want to be on the lookout for "Sakurai bias", the real test is going to be the enemies, the unlockable music, and the City Trial events.

On the topic of Kirby; when I went to the Kirby Cafe in June I heard a new Kirby Cafe music track playing in the cafe which was a medley of Cocoa Cave and Candy Mountain
The wikis don’t seem to have documented this, is there anyone who knows about more Kirby Cafe songs that might hint at a third album coming eventually?

However, anyone that's actually paid attention to Sakurai and has at least two braincells they can rub together has been able to see the writing on the wall with this next game. Air Ride 1 had only a few months of development under Sakurai. This next game is one he has been working on since April 2022, over 3 years, making it his longest dev cycle ever. There's more to this game than just new tracks and a new city trial map. No one can say for certain, but there's something more to this game than we can safely assume. If I had to guess, I'd say some sort of single player campaign or online battle royale inspired City Trial mode, but there's no safe guess. The only safe assumptions are that, no matter what, it will be a GOTY nominee and rival, possibly even outsell Forgotten Land over the Switch 2's lifespan.

Air Ride 1 was a rush job that Sakurai jumped on and only directed for a few months at the request of the lead programmer after development became a disaster. This, however, has had over 3 years in the oven (Sakurai's longest active dev cycle EVER, beating even the Smash Bros games) and was an intentional choice of Sakurai-san's to develop. Keep in mind, Sakurai puts it in his contract that he gets paid based on how much the game sells. He doesn't get any pay during development. While he could safely coast on his Ultimate money, or he might have changed that deal this time around, I think he sees potential in his idea for Air Riders. If he didn't, he'd have done an original idea if he wanted a break from Smash.

Uprising is the reason I'm excited for Air Riders. Smash games are great for what they are, but Uprising was sold as just another 3DS game when the handheld only had bargain bin games, and turned out to be one of the most expansive Nintendo games of all time. This is our first time seeing Sakurai direct a nonSmash game since Uprising, with even more directing experience under his belt and sway in terms of budget, and on an actual console. I truly believe this will be the stand out title for the Switch 2 this year.

Reboot would be silly. If Sakurai returns, it will be Ultimate 2, building off of the roster of Ultimate, or Ultimate Switch 2 edition, literally building off of Ultimate. The only way Sakurai returns is if he knows he can outdo his last one, and the only way to outdo it would be to do it again. You can't remove characters from Smash at this point without immediately becoming irrelevant in comparison to a 7 year old game, and thus losing out on sales. Entertainment execs have learned to run towards crossovers because of Fortnite and the MCU, both of which became the biggest names in their industries due to brand synergy from crossovers. The lucrativeness of a crossover is too hard to deny now, especially in an established IP like Smash. Nintendo farts out a Mario movie in an industry they have no foot in, and it is automatically the 2nd biggest film of the year. No one's turning down a crossover with Mario and Pikachu. The hardest part of licensing will be the music of the properties in Smash, as some of the music is owned by individual artists. I don't even necessarily want this, I just think it's the way it's gonna go.

The biggest problem with City Trial is that the final mini game is way less fun than the 5 minutes before it. The same was true of Smash Run. They need to find a way to make routing and build crafting rewarding.

This baffles me. The original Air Ride didn't really reference much of anything from past Kirby games Sakurai did work on either: Almost everything in the game was original outside of Kirby, the Warp Star, Dyna Blade, Tac, the enemies/copy abilities, Meta Knight and Dedede.

I wouldn't expect Air Rides to be a grand celeberation of the series, not because "Sakurai Bias", but just because that's not the kind of game Air Ride ever was. In fact it'd be a mistake to make it that because the unique movement gimmick and shared visual design of the Air Ride machines is a huge part of the original's charm and cutting back on that or not expanding on it to focus on different playable characters would be a shame

Nah, pretty much every ride had a unique gimmick: Excluding the Compact and Flight Warp stars, and Meta knight/dedede, the only ones that were "warp star but different stats" esque was really the Winged and Shadow star. Of the others the Wagon can't boost, the Swerve star can't turn without boosting, the Jet star gets a boost every time it gets air, he Rocket star has a megaboost, the Turbo star has a wierd turning mechanic I honestly don't quite know how to explain, the Bulk star has to charge to move, the Slick star retains it's mometum untill you boost, and the wheelies collectively can't glide

Start with Kirby's Adventure. If you get bored of it then just go right to Kirby Super Star Ultra, if you don't like Super Star then you won't enjoy any of the other 2d games. I would ignore the dreamland games unless you really enjoy Adventure, they're much slower Kirby games and the puzzles are tedious. Kirby 64 is a weird outlier since it has that slower gameplay and awkward puzzles, but its copy ability combining gimmick is really cool and hasn't been done again.
