Wtf? It's real.
If it's just minor tweaks I won't replay it, the game didn't have any tech issue back then, the actual problem is the 2nd half of the game was so disapointing and almost a copy pasta of the 1st part for some wierd reason. If only they could fix the city part and actually move the plot forward it would be worth it.
Increased graphics?? A new camera?? Don't give a shit that was already good, the combat sucked ass they could fix that instead.

It's not a remake they are just porting it to Switch 2 with minor QoL improvements, not a huge news but I'm glad the game is still alive
I hope they use this foundation to make Shenmue 4 and it's subsequential sequels tho, I always thought it was kinda waste for the series to die again after rebuilding the foundation, even though that's the most costly part when it comes to game development.

It was really the height of hubris to do what he did with Shenmue 3. Even ignoring all the gameplay flaws the fact that the story is literally nothing is comical.
3 was the only shot at this series having an ending and Yu Suzuki wasted it on filler. And despite a never ever game being made the franchise is somehow right back where it was after 2001: waiting for a sequel that will never, ever be made.

>No engaging fighting system ripped from VF games
>no licensed Sega arcade games or capsul toys
>no real progression of story
I’m happy they’re improving the stamina system and a few other minor things, but they’re essentially putting a bandaid over a gunshot wound here.

Not true, SEGA owns the Shenmue IP, they made an agreement with Yu Suzuki out of the huge respect they have for him still by licensing the IP so he could start they whole crowd funding journey to make Shenmue 3.
SEGA seems willing to license their IPs in enticing cases where a brand of theirs can used by third parties without their direct involvement, like Streets of Rage 4 which was made without SEGA's involvement, Dotmu handled everything, to the point SEGA was pretty pleased with the results as they now work together with the new Shinobi.

They still own it, they just a licensed out its development in order to avoid any of the financial risks of making a new game. Funny enough, they wouldn’t allow YSnet to use any other licensed Sega games or characters on the game aside from a few posters here and there. Sega essentially threw this game in franchise in the trash and told someone else to fish it out and make it something people would want to play and buy.

They should have de-maked the graphics to look like Shenmue 1 and 2, implemented the VF3 engine into it, and added an extra chapter to actually push things forward a bit. This is somewhat of a shallow attempt to drum up more sales. But being a complete Shenmue simp, I’ll probably still buy it.

Mostly, no. The hunger for more Shenmue pre-Shenmue 3 is nearly dead, and the fanbase is probably a 10th of what it was prior to that game being released. More than anything, Shenmue 3 proved to me that Yu Suzuki has no idea what he’s doing anymore and that his story for Shenmue 4 and 5 is likely far worse than my head canon for them. I’m content with the first two games which are the highest order of /vr/ kino. The series is more or less dead now as most fans have moved on.

That's because your entire personality revolves around parroted opinions from youtube celebrities.
More important shit happened in S3 than in S1 or S2, maybe outside of kowloon chapter.
The whole fake outrage from normalfaggots about the story is even weirder when Suzuki already spoiled each chapter of the story in like 2012, years before S3 was even planned as a KS project. Anyone that ever cared would know what was going to happen.

Barely. Those were pieces of artwork back when Shenmue was supposed to be Virtua Fighter RPG. Even matching them up with the current games, they loosely align. I’m fairly certain at this point that the entire saga has changed considerably over time and probably is way different than what Yu had in mind back in 2001 when Shenmue 2 came out and Shenmue 3 was originally in preproduction for the Dreamcast.
>>718400741
To this day I still think all this is just fake hype and fake nostalgia. I bought a Dreamcast on release. I played both Shenmues. They were garbage. They had everything we hate in gaming today. Walking simulator. QTEs up the ass. The most impressive thing was their insane advertising campaign and I think thats where all this fake hype and nostalgia comes from.

I didn't hate the combat that much, it's janky but abusing moves to stun lock an enemy was kinda fun
imo the biggest flaw of 3 was how the pacing of the story was just "train yourself until you fight a small-time punk (but not literally train because you're going to be in a multiple cutscene loses), go to the next city and do the same thing"
I'm fine with story taking a backseat and going back to the style of 1, but repeating the same structure was kinda lazy, and the gangs weren't memorable at all despite it being the main villain of the game

Though I did wish that they subsequently released sequels using 3 as the base, just like how they made 2 in a year with less budget by reusing majority of 1. I hope that this enhanced re-release leads towards that idea.

Nigger, in shenmue 1 and 2 the fucking combat system is integrated with the games progression. It's virtua fighter combat. I'm not talking about adding an arcade game, i'm talking about shenmue 1 and 2 being built in the virtua fighter game engine and utilizing it's weighty combat and combo system. All things they removed in shenmue 3. The combat in shenmue 3 sucks balls, the previous games are actually good. Shenmue 3 is good in other areas but combat is a third of the game and it's just not good compared to what came before.
Just give me this again for 4, please.

I personally don't consider 20 million to be a small budget for this style of game. I do consider Yu being rusty and not knowing how game development had advanced in 20 years as being the main reason the budget wasn't used as efficiently as it could have been, but shenmue 3 should have been a better baked product at the end of the day for 20 million. Shenmue 1 and 2 did quite well despite a lot of development issues, set backs, budget constraints, and learning new tech for the team. Shenmue 3 wasn't able to weather these challenges as well, maybe shenmue 4 will do better

Maybe because Shenmue is a slow game about opening capsule toys, and getting lost in a city asking people for directions?
If 3 was filler majority of Shenmue is a giant filler, 1 is literally about Ryo stalling in Japan instead of chasing the villain and going to China ASAP, and first half of 2 is Ryo dicking about just trying to get in contact with a goofy future-sidekick called Ren, latter half is admittedly plot heavy with the Kowloon gang subplot, but it concludes with 2 hour long mountain hiking in Bailou.

Because it's an eastern martial arts adventure game and if the martial arts is bad, people don't like it. Shenmue 3's reception is proof of that, EVERYONE laments the many changes to the combat. Go watch some old goofy chinese martial arts films and you'll understand what Yu's vision for shenmue was (with a bit more of a life sim twist, so it felt like you were living the stories of the films).

Sounds ok, but not enough if it's a paid upgrade for already existing PC/PS4 copies.
One major reason why S3 could have been better is that they had to scrap one entire chapter that took place in a 3rd new map called Baisha. But they ran out of time and budget and made a jump cut to that castle ending segment in Niaowu.
Maybe tweaking the combat to have proper counters and even just few throws like in prior Shenmue games.
I mean, some of the stuff isn't even a real new thing, like cutscene/dialogue skip was already in base game and shit like classic camera was modded by fans, so whatever.

I honestly realized I do not give a shit about the actual story. Shenmue's appeal to me was the recreation of 1980s suburban Japan and the cozy feeling you get of being in a place that feels familiar because your character is so intricately tied to it and the people living there who are all unique characters with their own stories.
It's why I don't like Shenmue II all that much. The setting change to Hong Kong took away the actual aspects of the game that appealed to me leaving me mostly with the stuff I didn't care for in a setting I felt zero connection to. And then Shenmue III was even worse because I do not give a fucking SHIT about rural China. Just remake a more fully realized version of the first game with more to do, more sidequests tied to the various characters whose stories are present (either fully or in hints) in the game and not just outside material like biographies.
I just want to go back to Yokosuka.

I think the first one is great. I don't like the second one at all despite how much people praiseit because I don't actually care for the magic kung fu movie plot; it's just way too actionized and impersonal losing out on the slow intimacy provided by the first game and its setting. Shenmue III is dog shit.

S2 still has its own merit. I think this is the only game that made me feel like a dumb lost tourist. I don't like China at all, but Kowloon was top tier experience. And all in all, all of the 3 games are comfy and have really cute girls as a bonus, Yu knows his stuff.
And yeah, Yu mentioned that he wants Ryu to return to Yokosuka for epilogue of Shenmue and also thought about doing Shenmue 0 with Iwao as playable character.

Problem is, Carter (like Ubisoft) will NEVER finish the series. Like, the cliffhanger they end on (the actual invasion) could have a decent ending arc, but he wouldn't end it after that.

Yes because 3 has a full recap of 1 and 2.
But no because most people treat those games as virtual tourism + martial arts autism simulator rather than a game to play for the story. So you will be missing out on some kung fu kino.

The first 2 games have tank controls 3rd person view like og RE4 if that's what you mean.
There is a native port on Steam, XBO, PS4.
The combat engine is from Virtua Fighter, so it feels really good to play the combat encounters. Especially Shenmue 2 has additional game mode where you can pick any boss to fight, but with new difficulty modes.
But yeah, Shenmue 3 is the one that has regular modern TPS controls but also really casualized combat and gameplay. It's honestly weird how people bitched so much that they are downgrading the difficulty even further in the Enhanced edition (while S3 already had like 5 different difficulty modes).

How as I so late to this thread as a life long Shenmue fan? well I guess it's because I'm still disappointed. I hope this remake has something to do with making this game better. Because I don't know if that's even possible, I don't know if it's even salvagable. The arcades were fun, that's the only thing that was done right. I'm outright gonna say the soul was missing in this game and I don't know if it's ever possible for the magic of 1 and 2 to ever be replicated again. If Yu Suzuki gives us 4 then I'll reconsider about how I feel about him at this stage. If he's actually dedicated to bringing this original vision to life, otherwise I don't know if this remake is anything to celebrate. It is important to stress how burned I felt as a fan. It made me feel and look stupid for defending the original games as hard as I did.

All I needed to do to figure out Shenmue 3 was a cheap imitation imposter was saving and loading into an area with key NPCs in it as they walk around the wordl/map and the game engine forgetting all of their positions in the world and spawning them in random locations. I don't know if it's Unreal Engine that can't do anything that complex, but when I saw that then I knew immediately I wasn't playing the same games. And they weren't life sims like the originals did it. If you don't know how much effort went into the originals I'd suggest you view Digital Foundry's video on it. It doesn't even cover everything. I think a better video needs to be made on everything Shenmue did that was impressive and all that details that went into it.

Plank crossing shit was awful if you had no way to save like on the HD collection, today it's not so much of an issue. If you played it on dreamcast and emulated dreamcast, then the section is rather frustrating even if you take the shortcuts. But yes putting the QTE at the end of the Don Niu fight was a real kick in the balls if you screwed it up. Because something about Shenmues QTEs meant you basically have to be incredibly precise on the timing, the most unforgiving windows ever. They just shouldn't be on the end of fights, I would agree with that.

Fuck off poser. Shenmue always had key NPCs that had a schedule and non-key NPCs that would spawn and despawn at a whim of the engine.
Same shit with S3, you have key NPCs that always roam around according to schedule, and generic NPCs in Niawou that are just there for filler.

>non-key NPCs that would spawn and despawn at a whim of the engine
No even the non key NPCs had time tables in 1. You can literally follow people around on their days in that game and watch them go back home at night. There were no 'random' npc because there was literally a backstory written for every NPC. And particular behaviours for them based on that.

Backstory on Passport disc doesn't equal shit to how they behave in-game. The game was already decompiled and NPC behaviors explained. The game has random NPCs as a filler, those are the ones you cannot talk to and will give generic "I'm busy" type of shit. They will always go from one end of the map to the other and de-load, since they are just there for that one area only. You can't "follow" them, unless you mean go from point A (where they load) to point B (where they deload).
The actual programmed NPCs related to stores or story are different however, and behave just like the store clerk owners in Shenmue 3.
Again, instead of parroting bullshit from Fag Foundry, actually go to sources that read the fucking source code and not made up bullshit.
There are tons of issues with S3, but it's always pathethic when you see fake outrage posers like that try to find some magical way why S3 is worse, for them to end up ridiculed by fans because this is exactly how this shit worked in prior games.

It didn't work that way at all in 3 because when I loaded in KEY characters like Ren it forgot his position. That is not a joke, I saw him spawned on the other side of the map. Opposed to where he was originally. And it's an outright lie to state otherwise that it doesn't happen. Unless it was actually patched since I last played, which I highly doubt.
